For Rosie Brumit, learning to play music in the Goofin Around Keyboard Class has changed her life. February 2019 She plays hours, not minutes each day Student s music helps distract from physical pain, relieve stress, ease depression After my husband retired in 2014, we moved from Dodge City to Wichita, she said. I was searching for something new and very different for me to do. I needed a new challenge. Rosie Brumit: It s very good for us that we have done this. She won a gift certificate as a door prize during a presentation by Cindy Houston, president of Garten s Music, at Orchard Park Senior Center. Brumit started the class, which is designed for adult beginners, in January 2017. She made new friends in class and at Organ Club and L.I.F.E. (Lowrey Is Fun and Easy) Club. She also discovered that making music helped her cope with pain and eased her depression. I have had chronic pain since 2004, when I had my first of three spinal fusions, Brumit said. I would not be walking today if I would not have had the fusions. I have found that playing my organ helps me keep my mind off my pain and changes how I perceive my pain. When I play my organ, I completely forget everything around me because I am completely absorbed in my music, she continued. Playing my organ is wonderful therapy, and it literally becomes a companion in depression and loneliness. I spend many hours a day playing my organ and I will continue doing so. Her favorite genres of music to play are sacred music and southern gospel. She has played for her class and during club meetings at Garten s, and she has performed Christ ucontinued on back page.
