Although he could guess what I meant from the ( a ), the word was a bit unfamiliar to him. In Britain we often use peaky to mean someone looks unwell. There are quite a few differences in the way British and American people talk about health. The biggest is probably that us Brits use ill to mean unwell, whereas Americans would say I m sick. Also, when you go to buy medicine in the U.K. you go to the chemists. In the U.S. they go to the drugstore, which sounds pretty funny to British ears as the word drugs usually means ( b ) drugs, not medicines! If you cut yourself in the U.K. you use a *plaster to cover up your injury, but in the U.S. it s known ( c ) a Band-Aid, which is also the name of the most popular brand. Sam says: Sarah has often told me that she has a chesty cough, having even sent me to the drugstore to try to buy medicine for it. I can never find the medicine for a chesty cough in the States; we would call it a chest cold. What s interesting is that the word chesty actually has different meanings in the U.S. While it refers to a chest infection in the U.K., it either means large-chested or overly proud in the States. *Canker sores are what Brits call mouth *ulcers (which you do occasionally hear in the U.S. as well). Many people I ve met from the U.K. seem particularly *disgusted by the American term, which I have to admit does make them sound much more unpleasant than need to be. Another little difference I ve noticed is ( d ) we each refer to stomach problems. I would say that I have an upset stomach, while Sarah will often say stomach upset. Grammatically, I m using upset as an ( e ), Sarah as a noun, though I ve never heard it used as a noun in reference to health in the States. 第 3 問次の英文は,19 世紀のイギリス社交界で有名だった Beau Brummel について書かれたものであ る これを読み, 下の問い ( 問 1~6) に答えなさい なお, * のついた語句には注釈がつけ られています The elements of the modern suit come from various places. The tie came from the *cravat in Croatia. Trousers were worn by noblemen in Byzantium, and developed throughout Europe in the middle ages. The word jacket comes from French, but the item of clothing itself has origins in many countries. Leather belts with metal buckles and dark leather shoes were commonplace, too. But it was one man that brought all of these things together into one ( a ) design. In the early 1800s, Beau Brummel was famous for being a dandy. A dandy is an old English word for a rich, idle man who was concerned with his appearance. After a short time in the army, Beau had ( b ) a lot of money from his father, and spent his life gambling and going to parties. During this time people respected him for his advice on fashion, and his sense of humor. It is unclear ( c ) he was being serious when he advised people to spend at least 800 a year on clothes (at this time 1 was a whole week s wages), but he certainly took his own appearance seriously. It took him five hours to get dressed each day. Beau was interested in making clothes less showy and impractical, and more understated. Fashion in Europe at this time meant that rich men wore short *leggings, brightly colored satin jackets with big shoulder pads, and very silly wigs. Beau created his own look by wearing a tight-fitting dark wool jacket with a shirt underneath, full-length trousers, and a cravat. This looked so good that people began to *emulate him, including Prince George who ( d ) become King George Ⅳ. Men s jackets once hid their bad construction under lots of *embroidery. Following Beau s influence, wool jackets were perfect in fit and cut. English tailoring became famous for its perfection. Beau was always neat and well dressed, but never wore odd clothing unlike many other gentlemen. ( e ), Beau gambled away too much of his money. He was forced to run away to France to avoid being imprisoned. The once ultra-clean gentleman died *filthy and broke in a French hospital.
