May, 2018 In this issue: Updates Welcome to TEMPO Music Banquet Fundraising Opportunities Happy Spring! It has been a busy few months and we want to thank everyone who has been involved in the success of the many music events since our last newsletter. We hosted a very successful District Chorus festival in late January in which 160 choral students from across that participated. We were treated to yet another outstanding musical in Nice Work If You Can Get It. This year s music department trip was next as student had the opportunity to see Carousel, Waitress, or Chicago. It was a beautiful day and all of the shows received rave reviews from the students. Our recent Spring Concerts showcased our choral groups, orchestra and band groups and finally our jazz ensembles at the Annual Jazz Fest Concert. These wonderful performances showcased the depth of talent in the Stoga Music program. Although we are nearing the end of the school year, please take a look at the upcoming events. Of special note is the end of the year Music Banquet, A Celebration of Music on May 30 th at the Desmond Hotel. It is a wonderful recap of the year for StogaMusic and families from all grades are invited to attend. If you would like to attend this fun event, please see the sign-up sheet included in this newsletter. Finally, as many of you know, Sue Dickinger is retiring at the end of the school year. Sue has been a teacher at Conestoga since 1990 and during that time has changed the lives of literally thousands of students. We owe her a debt of gratitude for all she has done for our children over the years and we wish her all the best in her retirement! Yours in Music, Bonnie Motel and Ann D Emilio - TEMPO Co-Presidents May May 14, 17, 21 Marching Band Pre-season rehearsals May 30th Music Dept/ TEMPO Banquet Desmond Hotel 6pm. Featuring 162 students from Chester, Delaware, and Philadelphia High Schools, the choir was conducted by Dr. Christopher Kiver, Professor of Music from Penn State University. The festival was hosted by Suzanne Dickinger. Many thanks go out to TEMPO and Tri-M Music Honor Society members for the numerous hours they put in to help make the festival a success! Stoga Music Theatre s production of Nice Work If You Can Get It, with music by George Gershwin, was a huge success! Featuring zany antics from bubbles in a bathtub to a person swinging from a chandelier, the musical was particularly entertaining and hilarious! Including teachers Suzanne Dickinger (Music Director/Pit Conductor/ Producer), Chris Nation (Sound/ Stage Crew), Mike Starner (Lights, Stage Crew, Set Design and Painting), Noah Austin (Set Design and Construction, Stage Crew), and Casey Hesse and Emily Zwart (makeup), the show was directed and choreographed by Nathan Shughart. Many parents volunteered their time and talents to make the show a success! Kudos go to Susan DeJong again for her fabulous costumes! Choral Performances Camerata members performed the Star Spangled Banner at the basketball game on Friday, April 13 to benefit the FLITE organization. Camerata presented its annual performance for Surrey Services on Friday, May 4 at 3:00 pm (the last senior day before internship). An added feature was the combined performances of River in Judea and How Can I Keep From Singing by the Surrey Choir and Camerata as the finale to the concert. NEW YORK CITY The Music Department trip to Broadway was a resounding success. 150 plus students had the opportunity to view one of three shows: Carousel, Chicago, and Waitress. Lunch at Virgil s BBQ and dinner at Brazil, Brazil were included. For more great photos: https:// varietypics.smugmug.com/

TEMPO fundraising opportunities It s just about time to kick off the 2018 Marching Pioneer Season! Our annual spring rehearsals will take place on May 14, May 17, and May 21 from 6-8 PM at CHS. These rehearsals are a great way for students to try out marching band and see if it is for them. Band camp this summer will run from August 13-17 and August 20-24. We hope to see you there! Students can participate in many different fundraisers.
