11. Deborah glances over at Stacey. The little pick-a-ninny s getting tall. Deborah pushes away her plate. (CONT D) Ya got ya wish for another daughter to help around the house. Too bad she looks the way she does. Esther looks down at the floor, ashamed. ESTHER (to Stacey) Ya done with the dishes? Stacey, her back turned, nods silently. ESTHER (CONT D) Go on. Get outta here. Stacey quietly leaves. INT. MCKENZIE HOUSE - BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS Stacey goes into the bedroom. Deborah s suitcase is on the bed. It s open. Curious, she begins looking through her clothes. She glances back to make sure no one is looking - then picks up an outfit and drapes it over her body. Looking back at the bag, Stacey notices something. She reaches in and pulls out a magazine. Stacey begins leafing through it. Suddenly something stops her. INSERT There s a picture of a man working with a model. The title of the article - Jean Paul Gaultier - fashion s new provocateur. ON, who is drawn to the picture and article. Suddenly the magazine is yanked from her hands. Whatcha doing with my things, ya little thief! Deborah smacks Stacey across her back with the magazine. Stacey, still entranced by the article doesn t even notice.

12. The woman in dere. Is she a model? What? Stacey points to the magazine. The woman in the magazine. Deborah looks down at the article. She holds up the picture to Stacey. This woman? Ya. Yeah. She a model. What a model do? What do you care? Stacey continues to stare at Deborah. It s a little unnerving. (CONT D) A model is a person who wears clothes and shows them off. Oh. (beat) And who s dat man in dere? (begins reading) His name is Jean Paul... Gaultier. What he do? Deborah studies the article. He s a clothing designer.

13. What s that? Ya stupid or somethin? He make the clothes that them models wear to show off. Stacey thinks about it a beat. Deborah tosses the magazine onto the armoire. She begins brushing her hair. I want to do that. Do what? Be a model. Deborah glances down at Stacey for a moment. You - a model? Stacey nods. Deborah laughs and goes back to brushing her hair. (CONT D) Listen you little pick-a-ninny. You not a model. You never gonna be a model. Models are the most beautiful women in the world. You an ugly little white powda girl. You a Dondos. No one ever, ever gonna say you beautiful. Accept ya fate in life. Tears fall down Stacey s cheeks. In the next room, we can see Esther has heard the whole thing. She calmly takes a drag on a cigarette. Inside the room, Deborah stands, looking at Stacey impassively. She tosses the magazine to her. (CONT D) Merry Christmas. Keep the magazine. You want to keep dreaming, go ahead. Just keep it to ya self. Deborah leaves the room. Stacey clutches the magazine to her breast as the tears fall.

14. (CONT D) (to Esther) I m goin out. Stacey watches her sister exit the shanty. After she does, Stacey opens the magazine again and studies the pictures. (reading aloud) Jean Paul Gaul..Gaul..tier is known as the bad boy of the...fashion... world. He draws ins..pi..ration from the streets and creates cotour. Stacey eagerly looks at the pictures again - studying them intently. INSERT SHOT A shot from the magazine of a beautiful model walking down a runway. INT. S SCHOOL - CLASSROOM - DAY WIDE and now we see Stacey is showing the magazine to in her school classroom. The class is full and noisy. So what a model do? She pose in nice clothes, like the woman yesterday. And she get her picture taken. That s her job? Ya. Then sometime she show off clothes and help try to sell em by walkin around. Ronald looks puzzled. She just walk aroun? Stacey nods enthusiastically. (CONT D) And she get paid for dat?

15. Stacey nods excitedly. Ronald laughs uproariously. (CONT D) White people are crazy! I been practicin my walkin. Want to see? She reaches into her bag and pulls out a CHEAP PAIR OF HIGH HEEL DRESS SHOES. Where d ya get those? My mother s closet. Ya mama know you took em? Stacey shakes her head. (CONT D) Oooooh. Betta be careful. The models - they wear these high heels when they walk. I m gonna show you. Class is about to start. Wait till tomorrow. Stacey is too excited. No, just watch! Stacey slips on the high heels and starts walking up and down the aisles. She s pretty impressive. The other kids watch as well. ON who s lost in a reverie as she struts in the classroom.
