F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions) Q: What should I focus on when rearing my audition material? A: We realize that your rearation time is short, however, we are most interested in tone quality, technical and rhythmic accuracy, and musicianshi. We are least interested in a tryout layed too fast that sacrifices these qualities. We urge you to challenge yourself, but be reasonable when choosing temos for your scales. Q: What if I get really nervous when I have to audition? A: We re on your side! We want you to ust be yourself and do the best that you can. Take a dee breath before you lay and then GO FOR IT! Q: If I lay oboe or bassoon, will I still get to articiate in marching band? A: YES! Every member of the Weiss H.S. Band Program will get to articiate in the marching band. Q: When will I find out how I did? A: Audition results should be finalized and osted sometime during the last week of school. Q: When will I find out more information regarding the schedule of activities? A: As of now, we know that summer band will begin on Monday, July 31 st. A secific, detailed calendar of summer band ractices and events for the 2017-2018 school year is available on the band website (www.weissbands.org). Q: Are the summer ractices that imortant? A: YES! It is REQUIRED for ALL students to attend the summer band rehearsals. You will find yourself very behind if you do not attend. Q: I really would like to be involved in many activities in high school. Can I do these activities and still be in band? A: It is ossible to articiate in other organizations in addition to band. Scale Grading Criteria Instrument secific scale sheets are available for download in the Music Directory on the band website at weissbands.org. 1: Made an attemt to lay the scale but it is unrecognizable. 2: Tone quality may be oor and most of the notes are wrong, or the student did not finish the scale. 3: Some of the notes are correct, articularly in the easier octaves. Tone quality may still be oor and the correct range may not have been erformed. The erformer regularly strays from laying with the metronome. The erformer had to sto or start over. 4: (quarter = 59 or below) Most of the notes are correct, or the rhythm may be uneven. The wrong articulation attern (tongue u/slur down) was used. Tone quality is accetable. The correct range was attemted, but may not have been comleted. 5: (quarter = 60-119) All notes and fingerings are correct. Rhythm is even or very close and the correct range was erformed. Tone is develoing roerly, but may be fuzzy, thin, or inconsistent from register to register. Dynamic intensity may vary from note to note or from octave to octave. Instruments and reed are roerly functioning. Vibrato may or may not be resent. 6: (quarter = 120-143) Starts and articulation are clear and resonse in the extreme registers is beginning to exhibit some control, though inconsistencies may exist. Tone quality is decidedly characteristic, clear, and resonant, with closely matched registers. Faster temos are used and the scale is not erceived as slow. Vibrato on long notes is resent, but is not necessarily erformed effectively. The last note is released with a sense of finality. 7: (quarter = 144-163) Tone quality is consistent and well-develoed over the range of the scale. Vibrato is refined and mature. There are no smeary registers and the instrument is in erfect working condition. There are no blis resent. Inconsistencies in itch over the range of the scale are minor. 8: (quarter = 164-179) Articulation is characteristic and does not change in any register. Melodic tuning is nearly erfect. Finger/hand technique and wrist action cause no instrument noises that would be construed as distracting. The erformance is erceived as effortless and takes on an individual ersonality. 9: (quarter = 180-199) All elements of musicality are resent and erformed in a convincing manner. The erformer has comlete control of the environment and erforms all scales as if they were inter-related. 10: (quarter = 200+) There are no discernible flaws to the most discriminating listener. The resentation takes on all ositive characteristics of a rofessional erformance.
