The film saw Ramsay win Best Screenplay at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, and won Phoenix a well-deserved Best Actor Award for his intense and unsettling performance. Shot in Paris during the height of the Sixties, Varda s second film tells the story of Cléo, a pop singer who passes her time drifting through different locations and conversations while awaiting the results of a vital and potentially life-changing medical examination. A forerunner to the French New Wave, Cléo from 5 to 7 was a truly trailblazing exercise in film narrative, shot in a documentary-like fashion to capture reality as true-to-life as cinematically possible. The film also has a famous silent film-within-a-film segment, which all film connoisseurs will love, as it contains cameos by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina. The Gleaners and I (U) To celebrate the release of Agnès Varda s latest film Faces, Places, we re screening two of her most celebrated films on the same night, in a double bill we re calling Agnès Varda de 5 à 7! During the dawn of the digital age in the late 1990s and early 2000s, The Gleaners and I emerged as one of the first true masterpieces to evolve from the new and (at the time) relatively unexplored format. Taken from the old pastime of gleaning (collecting leftover crops from fields after they have been harvested), Varda s documentary focuses on modern-day gleaners, allowing these marginalised people to speak for themselves and address everything from world politics to personal tragedies, whilst Varda herself questions her own morality in the process. Part social critique, part travelogue, this eccentric and eye-opening documentary is an unsentimental celebration of human resilience and how we should look out for those who live survive on the margins of society and listen to their stories without judgement. Part of the Scalarama programme in Brighton and beyond, a national celebration of cinema organised by everyone, for everyone, every September. Of all the movies I ve seen in the past several years, this is one of the ones I love the most Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune The Gleaners and I (U) Date & Time: Sun 9 Sep, 7pm (doors 6.45pm) Film Saver: Book two or more films in the same transaction and save 1 per ticket.
