Director & Judge Information 1. All 9 th grade students wishing to participate in both auditions must be entered in both auditions prior to December 10 th. 2. The 9 th Grade Band audition is separate from the Phase 1 & 2 auditions and requires its own $12.00 entry fee. Please see the online entry instructions for assistance. 3. Every effort will be made to insure that no judge has any visual contact with students. Anonymity is vital, and we will be using screens. During judges breaks, the monitor is to clear the room and the area around the audition room of auditionees before the judges come out from behind the screens. 4. Contestants will be placed in alphabetical order and must perform in the following order: a. 1 st etude: Top to bottom b. 2 nd etude: 1/3 down to bottom, top to 1/3 down c. 3 rd etude: 2/3 down to bottom, top to 2/3 down 5. Prior to each excerpt, if a student so desires, he/she may play the starting pitch for no longer than 5 seconds, articulated once. Keyboard players may roll on the first note. After every fifth player has performed, all students may warm-up simultaneously for 20 seconds. There will be no restriction on what the students may play, but disruptive activity could be subject to disciplinary action and disqualification. 6. Judges should be cognizant of the recommended tempo markings and be willing to penalize the students who do not adhere to them. Flagrant abuse should be penalized and reflected in the judge s score. 7. Other than a single-use metronome, no electronic devices such as recording devices, pagers, cell phones, mp3 players, ipads, or computers will be allowed in the audition room. 8. The percussion room will be furnished with 4 timpani and a marimba. Snare drums and all implements must be furnished by the auditioning student. 9. There is no distinction between contra bass and contra alto clarinet. 10. Warm-up area is confined to a specific area on each campus. 11. Students must be present at all rehearsals and the concert to receive the all-region patch. The patch will be issued at the end of each band s concert. 12. Students must participate in the region clinic/concert in order to retain their eligibility for all-state groups, unless an excused absence is approved by the region band chair. 13. Students must not talk in the audition room. If a student has a question, they should raise their hand for the monitor and ask the question outside of the room, or write it down for the monitor. 14. Students will be seated simultaneously by letter. 15. All students will play from one location in the room. A chair and a stand will be provided at this location. The student may sit or stand as long as they perform from that location. If a percussionist is using their own instrument, they are waiving the right to play from one location in the room. 16. Non-audible metronomes may be used, but must be turned completely off, including visually, prior to a student performance. No metronomes may be taken to the performance chair/stand. 17. Judges should bring a calculator to the room and be familiar with the music of the instrument they are judging. 18. Students must be eligible under HB 72 in order to participate in TMEA events including the auditions and the clinic/concert. 19. Any student certified to Area must pay the $5.00 Area Audition fee prior to leaving Lamar High School on December 15 th. 20. All directors who have students going to the area auditions must complete an Area judging commitment form before leaving. All directors from your school should plan to attend the Area audition in Midland on January. 21. All results will be posted in the cafeteria and directors meeting room. Results are not final until one full hour after the last posting. This time is for Directors to verify the results and correct any errors. 22. Upon check-out, all directors are asked to retrieve their students clinic/concert music folders from the directors area or contest office and distribute them before the holiday break.
