TOCFL Novice I. Overview TOCFL Novice, developed by the Steering Committee for the Test Of Proficiency-Huayu (SC-TOP), is a Chinese language test designed for adult Chinese starters who have learned the language in non-chinese speaking regions more than 60 hours. TOCFL Novice contains two proficiency levels: and Novice 2, which are below CEFR A1. The test is based on about 300 high-frequency words and uses abundant pictures to illustrate authentic situations, with the aim to evaluate the ability of recognition and comprehension of words/phrases. The test is divided into three subtests: Listening, Reading, and Speaking. The goal of the test is to provide an outlook of Chinese starters abilities on listening, reading and speaking, as well as encourage them to set learning objectives in their future learning plans after taking the test. Proficiency Listening Can recognize everyday, high-frequency words which are immediately relevant to oneself and delivered clearly and slowly, repeated, and supported by context. Reading Can recognize everyday, high-frequency words which are immediately relevant to oneself, with backtracking allowed, and meaning supported by context. Can understand high-frequency words and phrases related to daily life with backtracking allowed, and meaning supported by context.

Speaking With adequate preparation, can speak out a number of everyday, high-frequency words which are immediately relevant to oneself. With adequate preparation, can respond to very simple questions related to daily life using high-frequency words.

IV. Sample Test Items Listening In this part of the test, each test item includes three pictures (A), (B), and (C). You will hear a sentence. After each sentence, please choose the picture that best describes the sentence. Each sentence will be read twice with a 5-second pause between readings. After the second reading, you will have ten seconds to mark your answer before the next question begins. Please look at the example below. 他想寫字 In this part of the test, each test item includes a picture. You will hear three sentences (A), (B), and (C). After listening to these three sentences, please choose the correct answer that best describes the picture. Each sentence will be read twice with a 5-second pause between readings. After the second reading, you will have ten seconds to mark your answer before the next test item begins. Please look at the example below. The correct answer is (A). Part Three In this part of the test, each test item includes a question. You will hear a dialogue between two people. There will be a question with three possible answers (A), (B), and (C). After each dialogue, please choose the correct answer. Each sentence will be read twice with a 5-second pause between readings. After the second reading, you will have ten seconds to mark your answer before the next test item begins. Please look at the example below. (A) 他在運動 (B) 他在睡覺 (C) 他在打電話 The correct answer is (C). Part Four In this test part, each test item includes three pictures (A), (B), and (C). You will hear a dialogue read between two speakers. After each dialogue, please choose the picture that best describes the dialogue. Each dialogue will be read twice with a 5-second pause in between readings. After the second reading, you will have five seconds to mark your answer before a new test item begins.
