Jessi VanKley Unit 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svu23iikbn4 Conan O Brien The Hair, the gangly arms and the uncanny pallor of his skin, how did such a man gain such a strong rapport with thousands of young people across the country? Comedy. A past writer of the Simpsons, SNL, and a serial late-night talk show host, Conan O Brien has built quite a name for himself, and he is loved around the country. But how does a talk-show host in his 50s maintain a relationship with his younger viewers who can lose interest in just a week? Once again, the answer is comedy, but this time on a visual and social platform. Known for his gawky movements and his self-deprecating humor Conan O Brien has become a smash with younger people, and putting these things on visual social media platforms helps Conan build a strong web-base and establish his name, his show, his comedy. Team Coco His mass of followers, is also the name is used for the show s social media handles. This gives the viewers and lovers of Conan a feeling of companionship and gives people across the web a common bond, Team Coco. (Lopez, 2011) ( Conan This or the New Billboard, 2011) As we will see in the next clip, Conan O Brien utilizes filmed social media to show clips from the show. This is a great way to show viewers what the show is made up of and how Conan acts on camera. Conan even takes field trips, like this one to the American Girl Doll store. Roll Clip Conan s use of visual social media is imperative. Hosting a show on a very visual media means Conan has to keep up by using social visual media to stay connected to his online crowds. One way this is done is through the use of Flickr, in which Team Coco posts picture ( Conan O Brien, n.d.,) ( Conan Visits the American Girl Doll Place, 2013 (Team Coco a., 2014)
from the show, such as stunt master Stephen Ho, Pictures of different guest bands performing to entice to more vocally inclined viewers (Stephen Ho and Conan, 2011) And even pictures of Conan s writing team (The Strokes, 2011) And the man himself behind the scenes. (The Writers are Back!, 2010) But Conan isn t the only one promoting himself. Pinterest users love Conan and there is even a fan art Pinterest board dedicated to Conan. This means that even when Conan isn t utilizing social media, his viewers are to promote a favored celebrity and comedian and show him what they can do as well. (Conan Hard at Work, 2010) (CocoMoca, 2014)
(Jones, 2012) (Celebrity Cupcakes, 2012) Of course, some of Conan s own work does find its way on to Pinterest boards, especially quotes from the show said by Conan (Hot Coco, 2012) (Rockey b., 2013)
And his guests. But one of the best ways that Conan promotes his show and displays what kind of comedy he pursues is through the use of the Team Coco Vine. With Vine Conan shows what happens on the show in 6 seconds and can leave the viewer wanting for more. This is a great way to entice Vine watchers to further delve into Conan O Brien s show so they can see more of what he does. (Rockey a., 2013) (Team Coco b., 2014) This includes seeing his interns in action and how he treats them. Snippets of Conan s special segments, like Clueless Gamer (#internsmime, 2014) Conan s stunt work with reoccurring guest, Stephen Ho (#CluelessGamer, 2014)
And bits of Conan quizzing with his wonderful announcer Andy Richter, quizzing Conan for the immigration test. (Conan takes, 2014) So what does all of this add up to? A goofy talk show host uses visual social media, so do other talk show hosts like Jimmy Fallon. (#UScitizenshiptest, 2014) Roll Clip (Fallon, 2014) Even though they are both funny men, the main difference Show on screen display of both Vines is that Team Coco is diligent with their visual social media. They know what stimulates their viewers, and having a lackluster relationship with online viewers means leaving out a big portion of fan-ship. The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon Vine is updated sporadically and has multiple accounts, which makes it confusing. But Team Coco has one, and they are diligent. So, with diligence, and the use of a wide array of visual social media, Conan O Brien successfully uses different platforms like Flickr, Pinterest, YouTube and Vine to show the internet what kind of comedian he is while promoting his show and his name. Even when he isn t posting, his fans are. Everyone loves to laugh, so why should they have to wait for Conan at 10 when they can have him anytime? Show final wrap up clips of Conan. Cue music and finally Conan dancing. (Animal Expert, n.d.,) (Conan s Got, n.d.,) (Conan O Brien Conan Theme, n.d.,)
