TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVE RSITY V OLUME 1, I SSUE 3 Marshall News M ARCH 29, 2004... Some Quick Updates INSIDE THIS ISSUE: 2004 arrived and brought with it a lot of new potential. Before you know it, this semester will be over and it will be time to prepare for finals. Take advantage of all the assistance provided by the law library staff and the law school. Westlaw & Lexis has completed the 1L Training. Every 1L should be fully trained. Stay tuned because additional advanced level trainings will be offered soon. The Library has printed the 2003-2004 Library Guide and the Electronic Databases Guide. Pick up these guides today. They provide a wealth of information. TMSL Book Borrowing On October 27, 2003, The Gavel article, Take It, Use It and Pass It On, Not the Motto of the Law Library complained that we [the students] are not allowed to check out library books. This article will explain the Law Library s Circulation Policy that supports the law school s and law library s motto: Protect It, Improve It and Pass It On. All law libraries distinguish between the types of materials a patron can check-out. It is generally true that the TMSL Library follows the same circulation policy of law libraries around the nation. It does not circulate serials (books that must be updated) and books in numbered sets, e.g. reporters, encyclopedias, etc.. This policy protects the integrity of the collection in order for patrons to access complete sets of materials. Noncirculating books include, but are not limited to: Codes & Statutes, Digests, Government Documents, Journals, Microforms, Multi-volume Sets, Periodicals, Law Reviews, Reference Materials, Reporters, Reserve Materials, Restatements, and Shepards. However, the law library allows law students with current TSU Tiger Cards to check out circulating books. Most other books may circulate. Although Reserve Materials are non-circulating, patrons are allowed to check out these materials for two hours to use in the library. Reserve materials have high use and are limited to a two hour loan periods to ensure availability to all students. The in-house stipulation extends to use in the Annex so students may use the Pathfinders 2 Brown Bag Sessions 2 Legal Research Assistants 3 New Electronic Databases 3 Documents Corner 4 GDMD Special Collection 5 Using ALEX 6 materials for two hours while they study in the annex. The library staff understands that although many materials can be obtained online, good legal research requires the use of other materials, including books. That is why the first year program emphasizes manual legal research. The library encourages students to use all of its materials and encourages their circulation within the limitations stated above. If there are materials that you need that are not in the library, please let us know and also request a TexShare card from a librarian.

P AGE 2 V OLUME 1, I SSUE 3 Pathfinders/Research Guide Bibliographies The Library revised several of its research guides, pathfinders and bibliographies. A number of new guides and pathfinders have been passed out in classes and library seminars and are located in the Library. Research Guides, bibliographies and Pathfinders point you in the direction of useful print and electronic materials. Bibliographies are lists that reference to materials on a specific subject. Our bibliographies include references to articles in journals as well as to books. Pathfinders provide in-depth information on an area of law or a particular resource. Nanette Collins, Reference Librarian, and Marva Coward, Coordinator of Public Services, have visited several class- rooms and discussed ways of expanding and/or improving your research. Tracy Timmons has taught several computer classes and the Electronic Database Guide provides the needed user names and passwords to access those sources. Several pathfinders have been handed out in the Legal Research classes and through the Legal Research Assistants program. Stop by the library and peruse the information kiosk or the Law Library Administrative Offices in Room 109 to acquire a copy of available research guides. Why reinvent the wheel? These guides have done some of the work for you. They can save you valuable time and quickly expand your knowledge of how to use a particular research tool. Brown Bag Sessions The Brown Bag Sessions are off and running. The Library hosted its first Brown Bag Session on October 9th. To date, the sessions have covered: Developing a Research Strategy, Available Databases at TMSL, Federal Statutes, Codes and Legislative History, Citing and Shepardizing. A monthly schedule is posted on the Library and Library s Annex doors and is available at the Library Reference Desk. Please note by popular demand, schedules have been altered to address more pressing needs the memos were due and more citing help was needed. Also if there is a topic you need or would like to see covered, please contact DeCarlous Spearman in Room 109 or by email dspearman@tsulaw.edu. If you didn t get it in legal research, if you have a research paper due, if you have to prepare a petition for class, these sessions can help! Come join us and Feed your body while we feed your mind!

M ARSHALL NEWS P AGE 3 Legal Research Assistants Over 50 students graciously volunteered this school year to be Legal Research Assistants. These volunteers met weekly to get hands on instruction for each resource that was being taught in the first year Legal Research class. Students were able to massage the books and ask those questions that other students couldn t answer. At the end of the day 49 research groups were formed. The RA s helped to make this process doable. In exchange they received a depth of knowledge, a new appreciation for legal research, a Thanksgiving lunch provided by the Law Library Staff and a Certificate of Appreciation. The Library Staff has greatly appreciated the spirit and dedication that each volunteer exhibited. To all the volunteers, the Library Staff would like to say "thank you." The Legal Research Program would not have been successful "but for you." All of you have 'Protected It, Improved It and Passed It On.' New Electronic Databases The Law Library s subscriptions to legal research databases continues to expand. The Library has added several new electronic resources to our collection during the Fall semester. These include: 19th Century Masterfile, Berkeley Press Journals, InterAm, Legal Scholarship Network, and Texas Libraries with Interrogatories. All of these resources are available from the Law Library s Home page: www.tsulaw.edu. Access methods are indicated on the Web Page. See a Reference Librarian to obtain a copy of the Electronic Databases Guide that provides the needed user names and passwords. Also watch the Brown Bag Sessions calendar for classes that provide hands on training on the databases.

How to search the OPAC (ALEX) AUTHOR Searching Author searching retrieves any type of author (individuals, organizations, conference names, composers, artists, performers, editors, etc.). Example: AUTHOR: Calamari John Example: AUTHOR: American Bar Association TITLE Searching Title searching retrieves titles of books, journals, conferences, etc. The OPAC automatically truncates your title search: Example: TITLE: Contract will re- trieve Contract Act, Contract Cases, Contract Law, etc. SUBJECT Searching Subject searching retrieves only the official Library of Congress Subject Headings. If you are unsure of the correct subject heading for your topic, try a keyword search instead. Use the records you retrieve to identify the correct LC Subject Headings, and then do a new subject search. WORDS IN THE TITLE AND CON- TENT NOTES Keyword Searching uses words in the title and content notes when the exact title, author or LC Subject Heading is unknown. The search looks for the terms that were entered, anywhere in the title, journal title, author, subject, series, notes, organization name, and corporate names (including publishers). Example: Environmental law Law and education Legal education Next issue advance searching techniques.
