WELCOME TO FESTIVAL 2019 92 YEARS! A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival Association, I am pleased to welcome audiences, participants and adjudicators to the 2019 Victoria Performing Arts Festival. This is the 92th year of Festival, a measure of its success in the performing arts community in Greater Victoria. The Festival features over 9400 performers who all benefit from performing at some various venues in front of an audience and being adjudicated by experts in their respective disciplines. The Festival also provides a platform for progression of our registrants to the Provincial and National Festivals, and if history is any indication, their achievements on those stages are impressive. Those results provide impetus to our many volunteers and the Board. Our Festival had over 30 placements in the Provincial Festival and several in the National Festival. We are proud of their achievements. This year, Festival begins on April 3 and concludes on May Festival President 10, 2019. During that period of our Program, adjudicated John Sterk sessions will take place in disciplines such as dance, speech arts, voice, choral, bands, and instruments ranging from piano, guitar, woodwinds, brass and strings. There are also 10 Highlight Concerts, concluding with the Roberto and Mary Wood Scholarship Concert on May 10 th. The Festival owes its success over the years to numerous dedicated persons, some of whom have been active in various capacities for over 40 years, a tribute to their love of the performing arts. There are over 300 volunteers in our volunteer base, 19 Section Heads with their staff in each discipline in addition to our Board members. Holding all of this together is our Office Administrator Fuchsia Shier and her Assistant Laura Bull. Everyone works very hard and planning began immediately after the 2018 Festival. Festival relies on our loyal and generous donors who sustain us. They are comprised of individual donors, sponsors, foundations and granting agencies. They are listed elsewhere in this Program. We are grateful for their support for the arts. We invite you to join us at the Highlight Concerts where the talent being presented is celebrated. As President, I wish to thank all those who encourage and support our initiatives. To our performers during Festival 2019, I wish you every success. John Sterk, QC President 2

Acknowledgements Donations enable Festival to fund many operating expenses as well as all of our awards. We would like to thank all our donors who give generously to support Festival. For a current list of all donor names, please go to our website: gvpaf. org/donors.aspx Thank you to all of our volunteers! Festival owes its success and longevity to the ongoing support of over 300 volunteers annually. Our teams of dedicated volunteers undertake essential tasks including governance, fundraising, awards management, publicity, media, grant applications, sponsor management, volunteer management, and scheduling and event staff for over 2,000 performances that take place in eleven different venues across Victoria. We would also like to thank our student participants, their teachers and accompanists. The amazing performances that make up Festival represent countless hours of instruction and practice. Thank you to all of the participants for sharing your talent through Festival. Thank you! 4

Fiddle Adjudicator Pierre Schryer Celebrated performer and producer Pierre Schryer has established himself as a gem on the Celtic music scene among fans and fellow musicians the world over. Pierre s background stems from the vibrant Franco-Ontarian culture of Canada. From an early age he was immersed in the music and traditions of his heritage at Canadian fiddle competitions, and performed with his brothers as The Schryer Triplets. The triplets recorded 2 albums and appeared on numerous radio documentaries and television shows, including The Tommy Hunter Show. As a solo performer, Pierre has received numerous titles and awards including Canadian Open Fiddle Champion, Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion, Violoneux Championnat and North American Irish Fiddle Champion. He has performed with symphony orchestras across Canada with his acclaimed Symphony Pops show. Currently, Pierre is touring and performing as a member of the new group 3TíR, a dynamic trio with Irish accordionist Dermot Byrne and Canadian west coast guitarist Adam Dobres. 3TíR will be embarking on a 40-day Coast to Coast Canadian Tour in Summer of 2017 with appearances at festivals including Vancouver Island Music Fest (BC), Festival Mémoire et Racine (QC), Goderich Celtic Roots Festival (ON) and Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Festival (NL). Pierre s talents extend beyond his musical abilities - an accomplished luthier and watercolour artist, he currently performs on one of his own violins and has created the cover art and design for his recordings. Pierre is the founder and artistic director of the Canadian Celtic Celebration, a three-day festival presented in Thunder Bay, Ontario each June. Dedicated to passing on the tradition, Pierre teaches the art of fiddling at fiddle camps around the country and is committed to creating community through traditional music sessions and ceilidh dances.
