Bridport FILM SOCIETY WORLD CINEMA ON YOUR DOORSTEP 52nd Season: 27 September 2016 21 March 2017 www.bridportfilmsociety.co.uk Screening at the Bridport Arts Centre 27 September 2016-21 March 2017 Bridport Film Society 1

FILM Bridport SOCIETY Welcome. We are delighted to offer you our programme for the 52nd season of the Bridport Film Society. The society always strives to offer film lovers a carefully balanced programme of world and independent cinema. Over a period of around six months our Film-Selection Team views, discusses and argues about more than 60 films. We also monitor releases, reviews, and cinephile websites to identify films that may be worth considering before making a final selection of twelve. These films are chosen on a balance of genres, nationality (11 or 12 different countries of origin in each season), style, and tone (whether it is a serious, even difficult, subject, a surreal fantasy, or a lighter entertainment). We also try to keep to sensible running times. When a film is much longer than 2 hours (but is in our view fully worthy of inclusion) we try to make the point so you are all aware in advance. We hope our selection this year will delight, inspire and provoke you as much as in previous years. Our fortnightly screenings are highly sociable with a pre-film bar. As usual there are twelve films on offer this season, and, following a suggestion at last year s AGM, there is the added bonus of a 2 minute super-short film at the start of many screenings. These have been largely selected from entrants over the last few years to the DepicT! / Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival hosted at Watershed in Bristol. We are grateful to them for allowing us to show these films. We also plan to repeat last years successful fund-raising screening before Christmas in aid of the Arts Centre. We will, as before and nearer the time, call on members help to select a film for screening, but put the date in your diary for December 13. We think you ll agree that membership (at just under 3 a film) offers amazing value for money. For our first screening we have chosen Victoria, an extraordinary thriller with a unique selling point. Please be aware this is a long film, at 2hrs 18minutes, but worth every minute. 2 Bridport Film Society 27 September 2016-21 March 2017

The Films 2016 Victoria by Sebastian Schipper Germany 2015 138 mins English and German with English subtitles 27 September 2016 The film s unique claim is that 138 minutes are shot in one fluid, continuous take, without a single cut. But beyond that technical brilliance Victoria pulls the audience into a gripping drama that builds to reckless criminality. At the end of the film it is hard to decide how much of the actors utter exhaustion is performance and how much is genuine. (TA) An authentic piece of cinematic magic Jonathan Romney, The Observer The Look of Silence by Joshua Oppenheimer Indonesia 2014 98 mins Indonesian with English subtitles Graphic descriptions of killing and torture Undoubtedly a harrowing documentary, but beautiful and philosophical compared to Oppenheimer s previous, brutal exposé of state-sanctioned genocide of ethnic Chinese in 1965 Indonesia. It explores issues of compassion, forgiveness and reconciliation in the face of official cover-up. His interviewing technique is particularly striking and effective. (JD) The idea frightened her... that history could be swallowed up so completely. (Barack Obama, about his mother s experience in 1967 Jakarta) Tangerines by Zaza Urushadze Ukraine 2015 97 mins Georgian, Russian, & Estonian with English subtitles 11 October 2016 25 October 2016 Strong language, some violence Set in 1992, during the growing conflict between Georgia and Abkhazian separatists, two Estonian immigrant farmers decide to remain in Georgia long enough to harvest their tangerine crop. When the war comes to their doorsteps, Ivo takes in two wounded soldiers from opposite sides. The fighters vow to kill each other when they recover. But their extended period of recovery has a humanising effect that might transcend ethnic divides. (HK) Good old-fashioned storytelling- with a high level of craftsmanship. SFGATE 27 September 2016-21 March 2017 Bridport Film Society 3

The Edge of Heaven 8 November 2016 by Fatih Akin Germany 2015 116 mins Turkish and German with English subtitles The film, switching back and forth between Germany and Turkey, is a drama about redemption. It explores topics as varied as the tensions that accompany multiculturalism and globalization to the simpler human drama of how individuals cope with losses for which they bear a portion of the responsibility. By focusing on believable characters and not making the storyline too convoluted Fatih Akin weaves a compelling tale. (TA) The wonderful, sad, touching The Edge of Heaven is more about its characters than about its story. Roger Ebert The Connection 22 November 2016 by Cedrid Jimenez France 2014 135 mins (Note length of film) French with English subtitles Some strong violence, drug content and language This stylish, 70 s-period crime thriller is the European flipside to The French Connection. A dedicated magistrate, Michel, crusades to dismantle the most notorious drug smuggling operation in history. Le French always seems one step ahead and Michel is forced to make the most difficult decision of his life. (RM) Scene by scene it looks excellent: a gritty evocation of Seventies crime dramas, steeped in a period detail that doesn t ever feel kitsch The Guardian Palio 6 December 2016 by Cosima Spender Italy 2015 88 mins Italian with English subtitles Moderate violence & injuries A new champion jockey emerges. To the uninitiated, Siena s Palio is just a mad horse race in fancy dress for tourism. But if you liked Being A.P. you ll also love this documentary for its intrigue, frenzied passion and the spectacular closeup footage of the famous bareback horse race, particularly thrilling viewed on the big screen. (JD) Renaissance Rollerball Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian 4 Bridport Film Society 27 September 2016-21 March 2017

2017 The Brand New Testament 10 January 2017 by Jaco Van Dormaell Belgium 2015 113 mins French with English subtitles God lives in a drab flat in modern-day Brussels. Petty and vindictive, He lives with his docile wife and their children, perceptive 10-year-old daughter Ea and son JC, who together form a plan to acquire six new disciples and create a brand new testament. Their random disciples stories range from the silly to the genuinely touching. An entertaining religious satire, with room for humanity and optimism. (TA) My Nazi Legacy 24 January 2017 by David Evans UK 2015 96 mins English An outstanding depiction of history and resulting guilt from human rights lawyer Philip Sands, who confronts two elderly sons of prominent officials in Nazi Germany in face-to-face interviews. One has come to terms with his father s actions; the other is unreservedly supportive of his father s innocence, despite glaring evidence to the contrary. (RS) A chilling demonstration of how the poison of the past can live in the bloodstream of the present. Guardian Loreak/Flowers 7 February 2017 by Jon Garano & Jose Mari Goenaga Spain 2014 99 mins Basque with English subtitles Ane s life turns around when, week after week, she receives a bunch of flowers at home. Always at the same time and always without a senders note. The camerawork s spare visuals are complemented by the production design s earth tones, adding to a sense of interiority, the kind associated with rainy days that go on for weeks. (RM) Flowers is an emotionally precise, subtle and quietly gripping exploration of the romance and remembrance that they evoke. Hollywood Reporter First Basque film to be submitted by Spain to Oscars 27 September 2016-21 March 2017 Bridport Film Society 5

The Dance of Reality 21 February 2017 by Alejandro Jodorowsky Chile/France 2014 131 mins Spanish with English subtitles Some nudity & scenes of disgusting nature & torture An adaptation of this 80-year-old director s quasi-autobiographical novel. The story of his youth and coming of age in 1930 s Chile is portrayed in a surreal way with Freudian nuances. He struggles with suffering isolation, and from the hypocrisy of politics and religion while revelling in the sublime circus of his imagined environment. (JD) You may not know what to think of it, but you ll be glad that it exists David Jenkins, Little White Lies Difret by Zerensenay Berhane Mehari Ethiopia 2014 96 mins Amharic with English subtitles Contains some violent and sexual scenes 7 March 2017 14 year old Ethiopian Hirut is abducted in her rural village s tradition of kidnapping women for marriage. She fights back with shattering consequences, resulting in a courtroom battle. Doggedly fighting for her is her emancipated lawyer. Scenes of the stunning countryside are interspersed with the multi-layered showcasing of the clash between deep-seated cultural traditions and women s rights. (RS) A quiet and powerful drama, based on a true story. Hollywood Reporter Tehran Taxi by Safar Panahi Iran 2015 82 mins Farsi with English subtitles 21 March 2017 A documentary-like film set in a Tehran taxi driven inexpertly by Panahi, the acclaimed film director. His eclectic mix of passengers confide candidly in him. Banned from filmmaking for 20 years, Panahi says, nothing can prevent me from making films - despite limitations, the necessity to create becomes even more of an urge. (HK) A love letter to cinema, filled with love for his art, his community, his country and his audience. Prize Jury President Followed by the Annual General Meeting 6 Bridport Film Society 27 September 2016-21 March 2017
