March 2009 Issue VALENCIACOUNTY AMATEURRADIO ASSOCIATION Valencia County Amateur Radio Association P.O. Box 268 Peralta, New Mexico 87042 Inside this Issue 1 VCARA Minutes 2 Field Day Pins 2 Youth Event Scheduled 2 Events Calendar 3 3 4 5 VCARA Radio Magazines NMLEA Courses Homeland Security Courses Net Operators & Contacts VCARA Minutes of April 28 th Meeting M eeting was called to order at 7:00PM. Officer s Report: Joyce (KD5IAI) reported that there will be two trainings, the first is the Red Cross Be Ready training. No date has been set. The second is the Rail Runner training, one will be held on 5/12/09 and the second will be on 5/19/09. Please contact Joyce for more information. John (WA5VJY) reported that the repeater was down for about two days. A mouse chewed the black and gray wires on the power cord for the repeater. It has been repaired. He also replaced a poly phaser, receiver, and channel element in the transmitter. John asked to have two more sets of keys made for the gate, building and cabinet. John currently has the only set of keys. The club agreed to have three more sets made, one for the president, custodian, and one to be put in a central location. The reason for this is, if something happens with the repeater, and Brian N5ZGT reports on ARRL & Joyce KD5IAI on ARES John isn t available, someone can step in and handle the situation. Old business: Ralph announced the Kids Roundup 2009 Amateur Radio Contest. It will be on Saturday M ay 30, 2009 from 9AM to 2PM. If you can, please help by talking to the kids on the radio, or by helping Ralph and Phil with the children. They will be using four frequencies. You can contact them on UHF/VHF repeaters, HF, 6 meters and IRLP. The kids will be using Ralph s call sign NM 5RC. If you would like to help, please let Ralph know. New business: Dawn (KE5LZZ) chairman of the nominating committee announced that the nominees for office are: Jim Duffy (KE5NIC) for Vice President, Chris (W5CLG) for Treasurer and Dawn (KE5LZZ) for Secretary. VALENCIA COUNTY AMATEUR RADIO ASSOCIATION page 1 of 5

Mark (K5WMH) will become the Board Member. The only position that we don t have a nominee for is President. Everyone that was approached declined. If anyone is interested in the President position, or any of the other positions, please let Dawn know. Elections will be held on 5/26/09. We have a great club, let s keep it running. Program: Brian M ileshasky (N5ZGT), ARRL Rocky Mountain Division Director did a presentation on ARRL. Brian covers New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. Part of his position is to cover policy and decisions that occur at the upper level. Brian is also the trustee of the Sandia National Laboratory Amateur Radio Club call sign W5MPZ; he is on the Board of Directors for ARRL, and a contributing member of ARRL s Administrative & Finance Committee. Brian stated that there will be a division convention May 29-31 at Estes Park in Colorado. For more information, go to www.rockym ountaindivision.org. The Hamfest Duke City will be held on August 15-16. For more information, visit www.dukecityhamfest.org. Dawn Torres KE5LZZ Secretary VCARA Field Day Pins Orders for the 2009 Field Day pin are now being taken by Paul N5PR. Cost is $5 per pin and orders need to be in by June first. If you can't make the April club meeting, call Paul and place your order. These are popular collector pins and in some past years ARRL has exhausted their supply shortly after Field Day. ARRL also has T-shirts available with the Field Day logo, for $12.95 each. Paul Ridley N5PR 2009 KIDS ROUNDUP CONTEST The contest runs over the May 30-31 weekend, the drop-in basis Bosque Farms station will only be on the air from 9 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, M ay 30th. All kids under 18 are invited to participate; an Amateur Radio license is not required. Licensed Hams are needed as mentors and support staff. you hear the kids (or any of the other Kids Roundup stations around the nation) on the air, please give them a contact on VHF an d UHF repeaters, IRLP, 6-meters and HF. Additional can be obtained by contacting Ralph (NM5RC) at nm5rc@msn.com, Ginger (KC5M TI) at apoemge@q.com or Phil (KE5LZX) at philshaw13@yahoo.com. Ralph Clark NM5RC Ham Radio Magazines No, I m not giving away my collection of QST, which is now housed in several boxes in my shop. (Why do we hoard these magazines, now that we, as members, can get the articles online from the ARRL web pages? I don t know, but it seemed like a good idea all these years). First, and foremost on my list is World Radio, which used to be a $21 per year publication. You can now download or read it free at http://www.cq-amateurradio.com/worldradio.html. Not quite as large as the old printed issues, but it is nice to see the pictures in color instead of black and white. Next on the list is the K9AY club s newsletter titled "K9YA Telegraph." To read the latest issue, you have to sign up for it at the club website www.k9ya.org, or you can read a sample issue at the same web page. This publication is a short 8 pages each month, with several good articles. Another of the free publications is the one called "The Centurion" published by the Straight Key Century Club, SKCC. This one is slanted toward the operators using Morse straight keys. You can find at www.skccgroup.com/centurion. Coming from across the big pond is the issue titled "Ham-M ag" published by Vince F5FLD and can be found at http://www.hammag.com. You can sign up to have this one delivered to your e- mail inbox each month. Latest issue was 34 pages with lots of pictures in color. Article contributors are from all over the world, so it is quite interesting. VALENCIA COUNTY AMATEUR RADIO ASSOCIATION If you know of any that you enjoy reading, you might want to share it with others. Let us know where we might find it. Paul Ridley N5PR M any of the world s radio clubs have monthly newsletter (as does VCARA). If you have lots of free time you can go to www.qsl.net, go down the list of clubs and check each one out to see if they list a newsletter. I m sure that some newsletters are great and others are just blah. You ll probably need high-speed Internet to download some of these magazines, as the last World Radio issue was 14M in size. If you re on dial-up, let me know, and I ll burn you a copy on CD. Instead of hoarding the magazines in boxes stored away in my shop, I now hoard the magazine issues on my computer s hard drive. I m sure there are many, more free, on-line ham newsletters and publications that I m not aware of. NM Law Enforcement Academy (NMLEA) training! Please pass on to anyone who would like to attend.
