South County High School Library s MLA 8 th Edition Citation Guide Setting up your paper: MLA recommends 12 point font, Times New Roman 1-inch margins Double-spaced Do not make a separate title page unless instructed to do so by your instructor. First Page Criteria: In the upper left corner of the first page, include the following in double-spaced lines: Your name Your instructor s name The course The date Underneath this information, double-space again and center your title. Double-space the next line and begin your paper. Add a header in the top right corner a half an inch from the top and flush with the right margin including your name followed by the page number in consecutive order. First Page Works Cited: - The sources that you use should be included starting on a new page at the end of the work. It should be labeled Works Cited in Times New Roman 12pt font, centered, at the top of the page. - Do not include the http:// when citing online sources, but rather start the URL with the text of the link. - Titles of article should be capitalized and in quotation marks. - Titles of book and journals should be italicized.

- If the source has more than one author include up to seven author names. After the first six authors, include ellipses ( ) followed by the name of the last author listed. - When citing journal articles, many journal articles will have a DOI(digital object identifier) number. Use this number in the citation instead of the URL when it is given. - Alphabetize the citations by author in the works cited list. In-text (parenthetical) Citations Summary or paraphrase If you are summarizing or paraphrasing an author, you should include the author s last name and page number. The parenthetical citation should be inside the period at the end of the sentence. Example 1: When the author is not mentioned in the text. Long Quotation If you are directly quoting a source that is 4 lines of text or longer you will need to have a separate box with the quote double-spaced. The quotation should be indented a half inch from the rest of the document s text and should not have quotation marks around it. The parenthetical citation should be outside the period at the end of the sentence.
