The distance between two frets is called a Tone. A major scale is built using a pattern of: Tone - Tone - Semi-tone - Tone - Tone - Tone - Semi-tone. In the above the semitones (½t) are marked by slur marks. Thus in the scale of major there are semitones between E & and B & When practising this scale keep on eye your hand position and stay relaxed! Try to keep you hand as still as possible and just move your fingers. Keep your finger poised just above each fret and move them as little as possible. 27

So you should get the rhythm right and be able to begin to understand how music notation shows the duration of each note. There are four different lengths (duration) of note used. A rotchet = 1 beat A Quaver = ½ a beat When 2 or more quavers occur together the tails are joined together like this. (Usually no more than four together) A Minim = 2 beats Dotted crotchet = 1½ beats Have a look at the page on NOTE VALUES a little later in this book. 29

RHYTHM NOTE VALUES Lets explore how we note rhythm in music: irst lets learn the note names Breve: - an old note not used today, but it explains why the next note is called a Semi-breve: equal to one bar of four-four time ( ) Minim: 2 beats - half a bar) rotchet a beat called a quarter note by our erican cousins as in it represent a quarter of a bar. Quaver: now things are speeding up - there of 8 of these in a bar. Semi-quaver - a very quick note - 16 in a bar! One Semi-breve is equivalent to 2 minims and one minim = 2 crotchets etc So here we have a little pyramid that demonstrates the value of each note.
