At this point do not worry about keeping tempo (speed) even. Next try strumming three times in each bar, the song in in ¾, i.e a waltz this time keeping the speed steady and even. Then once you are confident and feel you are maintaining an even tempo you can add up strums between each down strum. Perhaps ending up with six strums in each bar thus D u D u D u make sure you have a good stress on the first beat of each bar. Then try another key. Now try a different key 2

It has become the best-known Peruvian song in the English-speaking world mainly due to a cover version by Simon & arfunkel. Paul Simon had heard the song performed by Los Incas in Paris in 1965. Simon asked them for permission to use the song and the band's director Jorge Milchberg told Simon, incorrectly, that it was a traditional Peruvian melody. Simon added English lyrics which were added to a base track by Los Incas and released the result on their 1970 album Bridge Over Troubled Water. It was released as a single in the US and reached No.18 in the charts. Daniel Robles' son Armando odoy filed a successful copyright lawsuit against Paul Simon. Armando said he held no ill will towards Paul Simon for what he considered an "honest mistake. Daniel Robles, Jorge Milchberg and Paul Simon are now all credited as songwriters. Armando subsequently wrote new Spanish lyrics for the song, taking Paul Simon's version as a reference. There are now over 4000 versions of the melody with over 300 sets of lyrics. 11

BEINNERS HORD HART Below is a basic set of chords for beginners and all you ll need to play the songs in this book MAJOR HORDS. MINOR HORDS SEVENTH HORDS 26

SOME NOTE ON MUSI THEORY Let us explore the notes of the Ukulele THE SALE O MAJOR Now lets use the scale of major to learn the notes of the Ukulele TAB NOTATION A 0 2 3 2 0 E 0 1 3 3 1 0 0 2 2 0 RH inger: 2 1 3 2 3 2 3 1 2 Pitch: D E A B B A E D STANDARD MUSI NOTATION T T ½t T T T ½t ½t T T T ½t T T In music the smallest musical interval between two notes is called a Semi-tone So moving up (i.e down towards the bridge!) one fret on a Ukulele raises the pitch of the note a semi-tone. The distance between two frets is called a Tone. A major scale is built using a pattern of: Tone - Tone - Semi-tone - Tone - Tone - Tone - Semi-tone. In the above the semitones (½t) are marked by slur marks. Thus in the scale of major there are semitones between E & and B & When practising this scale keep on eye your hand position and stay relaxed! Try to keep you hand as still as possible and just move your fingers. Keep your finger poised just above each fret and move them as little as possible. 27

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Like an echo! 28

BA BA BLAK SHEEP Traditional Now let s try a more complex Rhythm Hopefully you know the tune?! So you should get the rhythm right and be able to begin to understand how music notation shows the duration of each note. There are four different lengths (duration) of note used. A rotchet = 1 beat A Quaver = ½ a beat When 2 or more quavers occur together the tails are joined together like this. (Usually no more than four together) A Minim = 2 beats Dotted crotchet = 1½ beats Have a look at the page on NOTE VALUES a little later in this book. 29

MINUET IN (but not really!) This Minuet is from Anna Magdalena's Notebook an anthology of beginner pieces prepared by J.S. Bach for his wife. It is now believed to have been written by hristian Petzold 30

THE SALE O D MAJOR A new key and a introducing the key signature String 3 2 1 2 3 - inger (LH) 1 3 1 2 3 2 3 5 3 2 3 2 1 3 1 Pitch D E # A B # D # B A # E D Interval T T ½t T T T ½t ½t T T T ½t T T Because you are not playing any open string you can now play the scales of B and # simply by moving up or down a fret. You can (theoretically at least play every major scale!). Wasn t that easy?! KEY AND KEY SINATURES What are they? TBA 31

RHYTHM NOTE VALUES Lets explore how we note rhythm in music: irst lets learn the note names Breve: - an old note not used today, but it explains why the next note is called a Semi-breve: equal to one bar of four-four time ( ) Minim: 2 beats - half a bar) rotchet a beat called a quarter note by our erican cousins as in it represent a quarter of a bar. Quaver: now things are speeding up - there of 8 of these in a bar. Semi-quaver - a very quick note - 16 in a bar! And the equivalent rests look like this: Semi-breve Minim rotchet Quaver Semi-quaver 32

Each of the notes in the list below is half the duration of the one above. One Semi-breve is equivalent to 2 minims and one minim = 2 crotchets etc So here we have a little pyramid that demonstrates the value of each note. Each line is equivalent to one bar of And is counted out simply as 1 2 3 4 If you need to count to several bars (4 in example below) it is usual to count them like this: 1 2 3 4 2 2 3 4 3 2 3 4 4 2 3 4 ount: 1 2 3 4 ount: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & DOTTED NOTES AND TIES. Now things are getting a little complicated. A dotted note is a note with a small dot written after it. The dot adds half again to the duration of the note and is equivalent to writing the basic note tied to a note of half the value again, like this: Dotted rhythms are quite common - there is one in Baa Baa Black Sheep. 33
