December 6, 2016 Holiday Party honoring Steve Winogradsky and Ron Sobel NEWSLETTER A n E n t e r t a i n m e n t I n d u s t r y O r g a n i z a t i on THE CCC SALUTES STEVE WINOGRADSKY Our Go to Guy by Ronny Schiff STEVE WINOGRADSKY has always been there for the California Copyright Conference. First in a long tenure on the Board of the Directors, then in a rare two-term presidency conducting brilliant meetings. Now, as a past President, he s been continuously advising the Board and rarely saying no to requests for assistance. Attorneys thank him for instituting the MCLE Continuing Legal Education credit for the CCC. Last year, with Diane Snyder-Ramirez, he established the format for our Copyright Updates. He s a wellspring of legal information our go-to person, and comes up with au currant ideas for our meetings. With his endless contact list, he s assisted us with securing the best guest speakers; even stored our audio equipment, and constantly entertained us with his droll humor. Here s Steve s history: With over thirty years experience as an attorney in the music industry, Steve has provided global media and music business affairs and legal support for composers, songwriters, music publishers, recording artists and television, film, video and multi-media producers. Utilizing these capacities, he co-founded Winogradsky/Sobel with Ron Sobel in 2009. Prior to being in solo practice with The Winogradsky Company from 1992 to 2009, Steve served as Director of Music Business Affairs for Hanna-Barbera Productions, Inc., Managing Director of Music, Legal & Business Affairs for MCA Home Entertainment, Director of Music Licensing and Administration for Universal Pictures and Universal Television, and Vice President of Business Affairs for The Clearing House, Ltd. Steve Werenot (pronounced Weh-ren-oh) was a founding member and lead guitarist of the doub;ul Werenot Brothers Band. One pundit reviewing the celebrated Lapinsky Bat Mitzvah performance, said of Steve s eccentric virtuosity: the intersgces were sub-sublime. But creagve differences dogged the brothers almost from the beginning as Steve pushed to add more and more songs with long guitar solos in the mixolydian mode. Tensions finally erupted at the annual command performance before the Rotary Club of Oxnard when Steve interposed all of the guitar solos from El Paso into a requested performance of Smoke on the Water. The Brothers called it quits when the Rotary Club President demanded to be reimbursed for the rental of the smoke machine and return of his $20.00 Gp. Brother Dan, traumagzed by the fracus, later changed his name to Fraker and now runs a successful smoke alarm and fire equipment company. Brother Ron retreated into obscurity as a music industry janitor, frequently immanengzing the eschaton and what could have been. ~ Ron Gertz

After spending nine years on the Board of Directors, he was twice elected President of the California Copyright Conference, Plus, he served for four years as President of the Association of Independent Music Publishers. The unique longevity of these presidencies (elected positions that are unpaid and often gnarly) attest to his fine-leadership-with-humor skills. Steve is the author of a hefty 408-page book, Music Publishing: The Complete Guide published in 2013 by Alfred Publications, which garnered pages of 5-star reviews in Amazon Books. It s been adopted into the curricula of several universities. For over 20 years, Steve attended and spoke at the Texas State Bar's Entertainment Law Institute. In October 2012, he was officially declared an honorary Texan and received a certificate signed by then-governor Rick Perry. He was awarded the 2012 Texas Star Award by the Texas State Bar Entertainment and Sports Law Section, which recognizes an attorney annually who has made a major and noteworthy contribution to the practice of entertainment law. Steve was also named as one of the Outstanding Instructors in Entertainment Studies and Performing Arts at UCLA Extension, where he has taught since 1997. Additionally, he lectures in the Music Industry Studies department at California State University at Northridge. (And his students love him!) "Steve Winogradsky is a skilled a_orney, strong advocate for music creators, and a dedicated educator. As an educator, he cares about his students, is incredibly generous with his Gme, and has helped generagons of music execugves understand the intricacies of music publishing (oden through a wonderful mix of humor and sarcasm). His contribugons to the development and implementagon of the Master of Arts in Music Industry AdministraGon degree program at California State University, Northridge were invaluable and stand as a testament to his commitment to educagon. CongratulaGons to Steve on all his accomplishments over his long career. His regrement is well earned and well deserved! ~ Carey ChrisGansen Steve with CSUN Music Business Students It s been an honor to work with Steve Winogradsky in our CSUN Master of Arts in Music AdministraGon program. We started working together on the Curriculum Advisory Commi_ee in planning for the degree program and then Steve taught four cohorts in the Music Publishing and Copyright AdministraGon class. We re going to miss him and almost all of the students will miss him as well. There might be one student, who ironically has a four le_er name ending in K who might not miss him, but you can t win em all! Send us postcards from your travels with Rosemary. We can t wait. ~ Andrew Surmani Steve with Andrew Surmani and Carey Christiansen at CSUN

He has written numerous magazine articles on the subject of music for motion pictures and television and has lectured on a variety of music-related topics at MIDEM, University of Houston Law Foundation (1993, 1994, 1997), Texas State Bar Entertainment Law Seminar (1994 2016), American Bar Association Entertainment & Sports Law Conference, University of Southern California Entertainment Law Institute, The Hollywood Reporter Film and Television Music Conference (1997 2000), Billboard Film and Television Music Conference, NARAS, The Society of Composers and Lyricists, Loyola Law School, Southwestern School of Law, California Lawyers for the Arts, The American Film Institute, LMNOP (New Orleans), The Toronto Film Festival, Canadian Music Week, Musicians Institute, McNally Smith College of Music, NARIP, The Copyright Society of the U.S.A., Scion Music(less) Conference and various other symposia. As for his foundation for the music part of the music business, Steve is a guitarist, singer and songwriter, who is both a composer and publisher member of ASCAP. An aficionado of classic rock n roll, contemporary country music and a big Beatles fan, Steve was pleased and honored to meet George Martin and moderate an event at which George Martin spoke. Two of the many-credited composers with whom Steve has worked are paying him in-person tributes tonight You ll hear from Jonathan Wolff (of Seinfeld, Will & Grace, Married with Children and many, many other shows) who has flown in from Kentucky for this evening. And, here s the hilarious tribute parody from composer Bruce Miller ( Frasier, Becker, Wings, and others). Sung to the tune of He Ain t Heavy, He s My Brother" (1.) His beard is long He s also a kindly soul But that isn t all he's tall that ain't all He s learned his crad well enough to save my ass He ain t angry He s my Lawyer! (2.) He ll make it clear You re probably screwed this Gme They won t spend a buck but suck, all your blood. But he ll kick ass in each jur-is-pru-dent task. He ain t angry He s my Lawyer! (Bridge) Wears (his) blue jeans to a meegng; couldn t care less who he s greegng he sta-ands up for you, he s one ballsy Jewwww we loooooove like no other (3.) His pagence wanes as he tries explaining things you don t understand but hope He s no dope. But in the end, no one has a be_er friend. He ain t angry He s my Lawyer! ~ Bruce Miller

Tributes from his music client Janiva Magness Please send Steve my best wishes for a fun and fulfilling regrement ;) ~ Janiva Magness and one of his favorite rock groups and client, Gooding (who calls Steve Rev because he s a minister in the Universal Life Church and has performed weddings). I am one of countless folks in the music business who proudly say that the bedrock of their publishing knowledge comes from taking one of Steve s classes, or working with him first hand. I have been lucky to be Steve s friend and client, and he has protected both the friendship and the work like a champion. Rosemary please keep him in line. Thankfully the Rev knows he married way up :) ~ Steve Gooding All the best to you, Steve, from everyone in the California Copyright Conference and all your clients, students and friends!

RON SOBEL A Long and Fruitful Tenure on the Board of the CCC by Ronny Schiff RON SOBEL is a nationally recognized entertainment attorney with expertise in New Media, digital monetization, and copyright asset protection. As co-founder of Winogradsky/Sobel in 2009, Ron s experience and international relationships across all sectors of the industry provided Winogradsky/Sobel with a unique opportunity to develop strategic business alliances and deliver comprehensive music services. Steve was always so grounded in the practical aspects of the law, and I was so attracted to the new and developing opportunities of the Internet, states Ron, we began collaborating often on designing and negotiating synch and New Media licenses for our respective clients. The merger was a very good fit, professionally and personally. Together, they provided a comprehensive, innovative approach to client representation Preceding Winogradsky/Sobel, Ron served as President of North Star Media for eight years, a music publishing company founded in 2001, providing music placement and artist development services. Prior to North Star Media, Ron was Vice President/ Creative Affairs and head of the L.A. office at ASCAP, having held various positions over the course of 16 years. While at ASCAP, Ron was a member of the New Media Council, served as Director of Business Affairs, and signed Lenny Kravitz, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Dave Mason, among others. During his childhood, Ron studied the piano and guitar. However, he was not a gifted musician and took to law to represent his musician friends instead. He graduated from the University of Michigan law school and moved to San Diego to became a personal manager and nightclub booker. Ron has published several music industry articles, and his latest book, Music Publishing: The Roadmap to Royalties, has just been released by Routledge Books. He was on the Board of Directors of the California Copyright Conference for 18 years. On the educational front, Ron is Advising Chair of the Music Business program at Los Angeles College of Music. He served as Chair of the Music Business Division at McNally Smith College of Music (St. Paul, MN) from 2009 2010, and is a frequent speaker at USC, California State University at Northridge, and UCLA.

Ron and Steve, Thank you for all your contributions and dedication to the Music Industry throughout the years. Wishing you a wonderful, healthy, and happy retirement! All the best, Drive Music Publishing
