The principle goal is to continue to build fundamental music structure understanding, music-reading, and rhythmic reading. Statement of Prerequisites: MUSC 1031 Goal: The goal is to master practical working knowledge of music theory and structure, music reading, and rhythm reading to enable musical theatre students to become musically independent performers. Outcomes: 3. Solve problems using critical thinking and creativity Course Objectives: 1. To analyze music that includes 7 th chords, non-harmonic tones, modulations, secondary dominants, and borrowed chords through the use of Roman Numerals and Pop Chords 2. To develop basic part-writing technique 3. To correctly sight-read basic rhythms in compound time signatures 4. To correctly sight-sing basic melody lines in both treble and bass clef using solfege Methodology: 1. Music theory concepts will be taught through the use of the Scales, Intervals, Keys, Triads, Rhythm, and Meter textbook by Clough and Conley. Worksheet handouts will also be used. 2. Rhythms will be taught through group work and rhythm packets 3. Sight-singing will be taught through singing exercises on the board and in handouts Evaluation Criteria: A. Grading will be based on the following: 1. Attendance: Students will be expected to attend all classes. They will be given 200 attendance points for the semester. They will be allowed to absences. Each absence after that will cause them to lose 25 points. If a student is to miss a class, they are expected to contact the instructor via email. Page 1 of 7

2. Assignments: There will be assignments every day. Most assignments are due at the beginning of the next class period. All assignments, test and quiz dates are listed below under schedule of study. 3. Examinations: There will be 3 major Music Theory exams. There will also be quizzes on assignment concepts, sight-singing, rhythm-reading, and memorizing. Daily homework will always be checked and given 10 points for each assignment if done. B. Grading will be distributed as follows: Attendance 200 Music Theory Tests (3) 600 Sightsinging Quizzes (4) 100 Rhythm Quizzes (4) 100 Total: 1000 points C. Method of Grading - Grades are assigned on a percentage scale: 90 100% = A 80 89% = B 70 79% = C 60 69% = D Below 60% = F Required Text, Readings, and Materials: You must purchase the following items: 1. Scales, Intervals, Keys, Triads, Rhythm, and Meter by Clough, Conley, and Boge 2. Three ring binder, pocket folder Class Policies: Last Date to Change to Audit Status or to Withdraw with a W Grade: (withdrawal deadline; see: Admission and Registration Schedule Changes in the catalog) 1. Assignments are due on the date given. Late work is not accepted. 2. Assignments must be handed in at the beginning of the period. 3. If you know you are going to be absent, assignments must be handed ahead of time and tests must be taken ahead of time. 4. Phones on silent. Last day to withdraw is April 18 th. If you are not satisfied with the solution offered by the instructor, you should then take the matter through the appropriate chain of command starting with the Department Chair/Program Director, the Dean, and lastly the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
