The evenings are enchanted. Romance and adventure are in the air. Immerse yourself, heart and soul. Welcome to Asolo Rep s 56th season! Vision. Passion. Artistry. It s all part of our 2014-15 season and we don t want you to miss a thing. Subscriptions are on sale now. Single tickets are on sale now to donors and subscribers, and go on sale to the public beginning September 27 online, and beginning September 29 at the box office and by phone. Money. Power. Sex. Stirring words, calling to mind bold, daring, and intriguing concepts. Simply reading them ignites a spark. 2014-15 is the third season of Asolo Rep s ever-expanding American Character Project, and our charge of examining the many facets of American culture leads us to consider a broad range of plays each year. While we don t consciously set out to pursue an overarching theme, deeper currents are inevitably revealed that connect all the shows in our season. This year, the roles of women, sexuality, power dynamics, and money have leapt out as the themes that reverberate through the season, starting with South Pacific, and running through The Matchmaker, Good People, Both Your Houses, Our Betters, and Sotto Voce all the way to Luck Be A Lady. Witnessing how these plays speak to each other becomes a truly singular experience one that cannot be missed. As a company of creative artists, we ve responded so strongly to these plays because they give us a fresh way of thinking about the world around us, and more agency to engage with it. But theatre, at its best, is a collective, collaborative experience an ongoing dialogue between artists and audience. It must be shared in order to thrive. Your presence, your enthusiasm, and your engagement truly complete the picture. So join us. Discover why these plays matter to us, and to you. Come see everything and let that spark catch fire. Rodgers & Hammerstein s SOUTH PACIFIC Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Book by Oscar Hammerstein II & Joshua Logan Directed by Rob Ruggiero Nov. 14 Dec. 28 Previews Nov. 11, 12, & 13 From the haunting Bali Hai to the exquisite Some Enchanted Evening, this Rodgers & Hammerstein classic contains some of the most glorious music ever written. The winner of 10 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, South Pacific tells the romantic story of two couples on a remote island in the Pacific a U.S. Navy nurse and an expatriate French plantation owner, and a Marine Corps lieutenant and a young local girl and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of war and their own prejudices. Helmed by the director of last season s smash hit Show Boat, South Pacific balances intimate, personal stories with the sweeping grandeur of wartime drama. This exciting production features all-new orchestrations arranged especially for Asolo Rep. Sponsors fall musical This is ravishing theatre Variety 4 Asolo Rep 14/15 Asolo Rep 14/15 5

The THE MATCHMAKER By Thornton Wilder Directed by Peter Amster Jan. 9 Apr. 11 Previews Jan. 6, 7 & 8 With his eye firmly fixed on the bottom line, wealthy merchant Horace Vandergelder can t see the value of love even as he searches for a wife. But he gets more than he bargained for when he employs the services of renowned matchmaker Mrs. Dolly Levi. Mistaken identities, near misses and a wild romp through 19th century New York City flow through this madcap comic adventure like vintage champagne. The uproarious comedy that inspired the Broadway musical, Hello, Dolly!, Thornton Wilder s The Matchmaker proves that sometimes money can buy happiness. Sponsors atchmaker Extraordinarily original and funny The New York Times GOOD PEOPLE By David Lindsay-Abaire Directed by Greg Leaming Jan. 16 Mar. 1 Previews Jan. 14 & 15 In South Boston, a.k.a. Southie, this month s paycheck covers last month s bills, bingo is a night on the town, and sharp-tongued single mom Margie Walsh has just been let go from yet another job. Faced with the reality that her neighborhood is providing her with the same opportunities it always has none Margie concocts a plan to solve all her financial problems, and it might just be crazy enough to work. This humor-filled, Tonynominated drama from Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire takes a look at the haves and the have-nots as it questions the American dream and how best to achieve it hard work, skill or luck? *CONTAINS MATURE LANGUAGE AND THEMES. BOTH YOUR HOUSES By Maxwell Anderson Directed by Frank Galati Jan. 23 Apr. 12 Previews Jan. 21 & 22 BOTH A gem... as timely as tonight s CNN News Variety OUR BETTERS By W. Somerset Maugham Directed by Michael Donald Edwards Mar. 13 Apr. 19 Previews Mar. 11 & 12 Imagine a divided Congress. Imagine lawmakers more interested in lining their states pockets and their own than serving the national interest. Imagine an idealistic young congressman determined to expose the corruption by introducing a bill so stuffed with pork it is sure to oink itself to death. Will his fight cost him the support of his peers, his constituents, and the woman he loves who just happens to be the daughter of the Appropriations Committee chairman? A marvelously entertaining play that could be pulled straight from today s headlines, this remarkable political satire is as relevant today as it was when it won the Pulitzer Prize in 1933. Colorful characters, sharp wit and snappy 1930s banter add to the fun and fury. Sponsors YOUR HOUSES If this play were a personal ad, it might read: Rich American women seeking financiallystrapped British noblemen for mutually beneficial arrangement. A hot topic on both sides of the pond when this delightfully cheeky play was written in 1917, the exchange of a m lady for a large sum was all the rage. Given Downton Abbey s current popularity, our fascination with social-climbing schemes hasn t faded. A pretty 22-year-old heiress, Bessie Saunders, has come from America to stay with her sister Pearl, Lady Grayston. Pearl s friends include a cougar duchess, a princess who has separated from her husband, and two fellows both besotted with Bessie. But once Bessie witnesses the scandalous habits of this less-than-virtuous society, the emotional cost of social climbing is revealed in this sexy, stylish and wildly witty look at Europe s posh set and the Americans who crash the party. *CONTAINS MATURE LANGUAGE AND THEMES. Lutken with Nick Corley and Darcie Deaville, Helen J. Russell, and Andy Teirstein Directed by Nick Corley May 30 June 21 From This Land Is Your Land to Bound For Glory, Woody Guthrie was the original folk hero who proved that you can strum a revolution and do it with joy. Guthrie s songs celebrated the beauty of America, the people he met crisscrossing the nation, the history he absorbed and the social issues of his day. He brought a free spirit to popular music and his impact still thrives today in folk, rock, country and even hip-hop. In this new toe-tapping, heart-filled musical event for all generations, four actor-musicians perform 25 of Guthrie s songs, play 15 instruments, and celebrate the colorful life and rich musical legacy of this American icon. SOTTO VOCE By Nilo Cruz Apr. 2 Apr. 26 Previews Mar. 31 & Apr. 1 In the Historic Asolo Theater In this exquisite new play, Pulitizer Prize winning playwright Nilo Cruz examines the resiliency of love and the power of memories. German-born novelist Bemadette Kahn lost the love of her life during WWII when he fled Nazi Germany on the S.S. St. Louis, a ship carrying 937 Jewish refugees. Denied entry by Cuba and the U.S., the ship was forced to return to Europe where concentration camps awaited many of its passengers. Bemadette s past resurfaces when a young Jewish-Cuban writer contacts her to research the ship s tragic voyage, which also claimed the life of his great aunt. As their relationship deepens, the play intertwines imagination and reality to illuminate a beautiful story of lost love, regret, reconciliation and rebirth.
