This season marks my 15th year with this gifted group of musicians. The Sammamish Symphony Orchestra continues to grow in artistic excellence, and the dedication of each member is evident in the quality of this fine musical ensemble. This weekend s Holiday Pops concerts are Friday evening at Meydenbauer Theatre and Sunday afternoon at Eastlake Performing Arts Center. The Sunday performance features the Beaver Lake Middle School Choir, led by their Music Director, Tina Worthington. We welcome them back for their second Holiday Pops collaboration with the orchestra. We also welcome The Rhythmics Handbell Choir of Fall City United Methodist Church and their Director, Marion Querro, who are joining us for the first time in a setting of the Coventry Carol. The Sammamish Symphony s 2013/2014 season is an exciting year as the Orchestra expands its season s programs to the Theatre at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. We will continue to perform on Sunday afternoons at Eastlake Performing Arts Center, but we will present additional Friday or Thursday R. Joseph Scott R. Joseph Scott Music Director and Conductor, R. Joseph Scott has been a dynamic leader in the Northwest musical community for over 40 years. He is currently celebrating his 15th year with the Sammamish Symphony Orchestra. Maestro Scott has conducted concerts featuring a diverse array of artists, including Metropolitan Opera star Roberta Peters; violinist Pamela Frank; cellist Julian Schwarz; the Seattle Opera Chorus; the Empire Brass Quintet; the Seattle Symphony Choral; and vocalists Anna Maria Alberghetti, Lou Rawls, Maureen McGovern and Marni Nixon. He has also featured members of the Seattle Symphony: Kimberly Russ, piano; Ben Hausman, oboe; Simon James, violin. Mr. Scott founded the Bellevue Philharmonic Orchestra, serving as Music Director, Conductor and General Manager from 1967-1997 and served as Resident Conductor of Lyric Opera Northwest from 2005-2009. He has appeared with numerous musical ensembles, including the Bellevue Opera and has conducted world premieres of works by Alan Hovhaness, Vaclav Nelhybel and various regional composers. Maestro Scott attended the University of Oregon, School of Music and studied conducting with Eugene Furst and Wolfgang Martin of the Portland Opera. After moving to Seattle, Mr. Scott continued his studies with Henry Holt of the Seattle Opera, Mikael Scheremetiew of the Thalia Conservatory, and Vilem Sokol of the Seattle Youth Symphony. Mr. Scott has received the City of Sammamish SAMMI Award for the Arts, Best of Bellevue Musical Arts Pioneer Award, and City of Sammamish Certificate of Recognition for Dedicated Leadership & Music Appreciation. 2 evening performances of each concert at Meydenbauer. This is the first year that our audiences can attend any of our regular concerts at either location. Performing at Meydenbauer continues our efforts to enlarge our audience and become better known throughout the Eastside. The Cantaré Vocal Ensemble has again invited the Sammamish Symphony to take part in a special appearance at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. On Sunday, March 30, 2014, we will perform Mozart s Great Mass in C minor with 300 voices comprised of several Puget Sound choral groups, as well as a solo performance by the Symphony of Finlandia by Sibelius. This will be our fifth collaboration with Cantaré. It is an honor for our Orchestra to participate in this extraordinary event. This weekend s concerts are followed by our February performance of Northern Lights, which features Sibelius s Symphony No. 1 and soloist Inger-Kristine Riber performing Grieg s Piano Concerto. We wrap up our season in June with Pictures at an Exhibition, composed by Mussorgsky and orchestrated by Ravel one of the most recorded and performed showpieces of the orchestral repertoire. The June concert will also highlight our Youth Concerto Competition Winner. Now, I invite you to sit back and enjoy the concert! R. Joseph Scott

Featured Guests The Sammamish Symphony welcomes Beaver Lake Middle School Choir Tina Worthington, Choir Director The Beaver Lake Middle School (BLMS) Choir is a combined choir of 7th and 8th grade girls and 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys. The Beaver Lake Middle School Choir has already performed a Fall Concert this school year and will also be performing at Seattle Center s Winterfest before the end of the holiday season. In addition, the BLMS choirs will perform at several concerts and assemblies throughout the remainder of the school year and take a Disney Music Tour May 17-20. This is the second time that the choir has performed with the Sammamish Symphony and we are super excited to be part of this special holiday event. We will do our best to share our gift of music as we do when we sing for our audiences throughout the year! This year we also feature The Rhythmics Handbell Choir of the Fall City United Methodist Church. Marion Querro, Director 6

James A. Beckel Jr. A Christmas Fanfare Trombonist with the Indianapolis Symphony, James Beckel is also an active composer and arranger whose works have been performed by numerous professional orchestras. A Christmas Fanfare was commissioned by the Indianapolis Symphony for their 1992 Yuletide Concert and has been performed by over 50 ensembles. The orchestral version is written to either segue into Leroy Anderson s A Christmas Program Notes Festival (as we do in this concert) or to stand on its own. Leroy Anderson A Christmas Festival A renowned composer of short, light concert pieces, many of which were introduced by the Boston Pops Orchestra, Leroy Anderson was described by John Williams as one of the great American masters of light orchestral music. Anderson s medley A Christmas Festival was composed in 1950 and released in a shortened version in 1952. Our concert presents Anderson s original version, republished from the Boston Pops archival copies. Leroy Anderson Sleigh Ride Anderson s popular Sleigh Ride was not written as a Christmas piece, but as a work that describes a winter event. Anderson started the work during a heat wave in August 1946. The Boston Pops recording was the first pure orchestral piece to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Pop Music chart. Robert Wendel, arranger Coventry Carol As Pops conductor, Robert Wendel has guest conducted many of the major symphony orchestras in America and has toured as conductor for Harry Connick Jr., culminating in the PBS special Romance From Paris and concert for the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. As composer and arranger, Wendel has written for musical theater, symphony orchestra, PBS-TV, and the 1993 Presidential Inauguration. Coventry Carol dates to 16th century England and is traditionally sung a cappella. Wendel s version for chimes, harp, strings, and handbells is arranged in the style of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, and is particularly influenced by that composer s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. Morten Lauridsen, arranged by Scott Selfon O Magnum Mysterium O Magnum Mysterium (English translation, O Great Mystery ) is a responsorial chant from the Matins of Christmas. A number of composers have reworked the chant into contemporary settings, including Byrd, Gabrieli, Palestrina, and Poulenc. 7 A native of the Pacific Northwest, Morten Lauridsen is currently

Distinguished Professor of Composition at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. His vocal cycles, instrumental works, art songs, and series of motets are performed worldwide and have been recorded on over two hundred CDs, including several Grammy nominated albums. In 2006, Lauridsen was named an American Choral Master by the National Endowment for the Arts, and in 2007 he was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest artistic award in the U.S., for his composition of radiant choral works combining musical beauty, power, and spiritual depth. Lauridsen arranged O Magnum Mysterium for various combinations of voice and instruments, but his a cappella version is the source of the present arrangement by Scott Selfon, Lauridsen s admirer and former student. Selfon is senior audio specialist in Microsoft s Advanced Technology Group, where he assists composers, sound designers, audio programmers, and game designers with technical and creative challenges in developing sound for games. Dan Goeller Fiesta De Navidad As a holiday Pops arranger, Dan Goeller applies his forte for integrating traditional tunes into different music styles. Goeller has also worked on recordings and tours with artists including Amy Grant, CeCe Williams, and Nickel Creek. Fiesta de Navidad is a festive medley of popular Christmas carols arranged in the style of modern Latin symphonic pieces like Moncayo s Huapango and Marquez s Danzon No. 2. Goeller dedicated the piece to his friends of La Orquesta Beerseba de Chihauhua, Mexico David Lovrien Minor Alterations Composer in residence of the Dallas Wind Symphony, David Lovrien works professionally both as a programming manager and as a musician. As holiday shopping sneaks into Halloween, there is some basis for spooky-sounding Christmas tunes a la Nightmare Before Christmas. (Or perhaps it takes a programmer to match OCT31 with DEC25.) Minor Alterations: Christmas Through the Looking Glass is a medley of favorite Christmas tunes, transposed from major to minor keys, then disguised, layered, and morphed even more. Mykola Leontovych/Randy Vader Carol of the Kings (Sunday only) In Carol of the Kings, Randy Vader develops a new conception and lyric for the familiar Carol of the Bells by Mykola Leontovych, Ukrainian nationalist composer, teacher, choral conductor, priest, and martyr. Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard Believe from The Polar Express (Sunday only) So much hype was generated about the production process of making super-realistic animated characters that many reviews of The Polar Express ignored the fact that the 2004 film was a musical However, upon the arrival of the awards season, composer Alan Silvestri and lyricist Glen Ballard received the bulk of the recognition aimed at the movie. Their Josh Groban-performed song Believe received a Grammy Award The Sammamish Symphony would like to thank Gordon Brown and the Gordon Brown Foundation for the generous contribution for music to build the Symphony s library. Gordon has been an active member and contra-bassoon player with the symphony for many years. 8

along with Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. Mark Hayes, arranger Jingle Bells (Sunday only) Jingle Bells was written by James Lord Pierpont and published under the title One Horse Open Sleigh in the autumn of 1857. Even though it is now associated with the Christmas holiday season, it was originally written for Thanksgiving. Arranger Mark Hayes based today s arrangement on an adaptation entitled Jingle Bells? by Jack Gold and Marty Paich featured on Barbra Streisand s 1967 recording A Christmas Album. The album is one of Streisand s bestselling albums and is ranked as one of the best-selling Christmas albums of all time. Hayes s choral adaptation uses clever rhythmic twists and tempo and key changes to freshen the traditional song. David Culross Christmas Fantasia (Friday only) Composer, arranger, educator, and clinician, David Culross has had a wide and varied background in music. As a writer and editor for Singspiration Music Publishers, he has released numerous church music titles for adult and children s choirs. In recent years Culross has turned his writing toward the symphonic arena. He is presently a composer/arranger with the Grand Rapids Symphony. Child, Patapan, and Masters In This Hall. In the hands of Culross, they take on a new life in a very modern-sounding work with a Renaissance twist. Dan Goeller, arranger Appalachian Carol (Friday only) Dan Goeller s arrangement is a lush, film-score styled arrangement of the traditional Appalachian Carol. It begins and ends with an ethereal tin whistle solo and culminates in a soaring setting of this slice of Americana. Robert Wendel Caribbean Sleigh Ride A percussive bounce permeates Caribbean Sleigh Ride. The cold outside inspired Robert Wendel to turn up the heat with islandflavored snippets of holiday songs over a fast merengue beat. The work s premiere cycle include the Orlando Philharmonic, Grand Rapids Symphony, Nashville Symphony, and Charlotte Symphony, as well as a TV broadcast by the Flint Symphony. Robert Wendel Little Bolero Boy The Little Drummer Boy, also known as Carol of the Drum, is a popular Christmas song written by Katherine Davis in 1941. The song has echoes of earlier European melodies. In Robert Wendel s variation, Little Bolero Boy combines the Davis classic with Maurice Ravel s hypnotically building repetitions of Bolero. The result is a singular hybrid. Christopher Tyler Nickel Christmas Morning A successful writer of concert, film, and television music, Christopher Tyler Nickel s awards include the 2004 Gold Metal for Best Action Score at the Park City Film Music Festival, the 2002 Golden Key International Performing Arts Award for Musical Composition, and two 2009 JPF (Just Plain Folks) Music Awards for Best Contemporary Classical Album and Best Contemporary Classical Song. Christmas Morning is a sound portrait of falling snow, the children awaking and running downstairs to open their presents, a brass band playing carols in the distance, the family dinner, and a fanfare-like finale to the spirit of the day. Its 2011 premiere cycle included the Atlanta Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony, and the Champaign- Urbana Symphony. 2013 Sammamish Symphony Cascade Woman s Club Living the Volunteer Spirit The GFWC Cascade Woman's Club is a non-profit charitable organization bringing together women from surrounding areas to promote community service and welfare locally, regionally and internationally.
