Some SAC info What SAC is and does Salamanca Arts Centre (SAC) is Tasmania s premier multi-arts centre; the state s foremost centre for artists-in-studios; home to many of Tasmania s leading arts organisations across live performance, film and writing; and cultural and commercial galleries for visual arts, crafts and design. Galleries at SAC include the Long Gallery, Sidespace Gallery, Kelly s Garden Installation Space, Top Gallery, Studio Gallery and Lightbox, offering high visibility exhibition space. SAC also a large newly renovated multi-purpose space, The Founders Room. SAC s theatre and major exhibition spaces provide an annual program embracing SAC-curated and programmed events and community access. SAC houses the unique Peacock Theatre, which is built into the live rock wall and is used for performance, music and film events. The Courtyard is home to Rektango, a weekly live music event that is now a Hobart institution. In any year more than 6,400 artists, technicians and artisans are represented through the activity of SAC and residents retail galleries, art organisations, events, exhibitions and performances. The economic contribution to the State s creative economy and brand is considerable. SAC contributes arts projects of excellence to Tasmania s international arts festival, Ten Days on the Island, Dark MOFO and Festival of Voices; presents an annual arts program including A Major Visual Arts Exhibition, Mobile States, Situate Arts In Festival and the HyPe (Hybrid Performance) program; supports and facilitates local artists, and facilitates workshops and master classes. If you have any questions, please contact: Kelly Drummond Cawthon peacocktheatre@salarts.org.au Background SAC was established in 1975-1978 in the seven iconic heritage Georgian sandstone dockside warehouses at 65 79 Salamanca Place in Hobart. Since then SAC has provided a focus for diverse cultural activity, which has significantly shaped both arts in Hobart and Tasmania, and the Salamanca precinct as an arts destination. SPACE SPACE is the training program of Salamanca Arts Centre. We educate emerging artists, arts workers and future industry professionals, with courses including accredited training in producing for theatre and live events, and nonaccredited performance classes and workshops. Our full-time Certificate IV course is designed to train students as multi-skilled arts workers. It covers a broad range of skills, including planning and project management and technical and front of house skills for theatre and live arts events. Students of SPACE are based at Salamanca Arts Centre, with full access to our venues. This is the only course of its kind in Tasmania, offering extensive use of a fully operational theatre, galleries and multi-purpose spaces. The Peacock Theatre Industry Learning in Action In 2016 The Peacock Theatre will be home base for the SPACE program: the SPACE faculty and students will support Peacock Theatre events, programming and presentation. The Peacock Theatre The Peacock Theatre is housed within the Salamanca Arts Centre on Hobart s historic waterfront. The back wall of the stage area, a natural rock face, provides a unique backdrop. The theatre is used for theatrical and dance performances, music events, seminars, film screenings, fashion shows, cabaret, lectures and debates. Through its Venue Hire Program, SAC serves as an important resource for the artistic community by helping to meet the need for affordable rehearsal and performance space in Hobart. SAC offers subsidized rehearsal and creative development hires to non-profit dance, music, theatre and multimedia artists and companies and organisations. Due to the sound bleed between the two venues we advise Peacock Theatre Hirers to commence their performances no earlier than 8:00pm on Friday evenings. 3
Performances One of Hobart s long-standing venues for live performance, the Peacock Theatre hosts presentations by local and international companies, theatre productions, chamber music concerts and more. Our intimate performance space is at the centre of a vibrant neighbourhood with an array of restaurants, bars, and cafes, making it an ideal destination for cultural consumers. Groups requiring ample space, such as large musical ensembles, are easily accommodated in the Peacock Theater. Venue features Tarkett Sound system Access to restrooms, change room, and shower. Conferences & Meetings The Peacock Theatre provides a quiet, private setting for conferences and meetings ranging from large seminars to small group workshops and staff retreats. Conferences requiring simultaneous events or breakout sessions can be served by renting multiple spaces throughout the Arts Centre. SAC s Salamanca location is at the heart of Hobart within walking distance from the CBD. Hire features: HD-capable projector for video and power point Microphones Technical support provided by SPACE students Chairs, Folding tables Film Screenings SAC s Peacock Theatre is outfitted with an HDcapable projector, screen and sound system. SAC is equipped to implement technical set-up for Q&A sessions, and the SPACE Lounge provides an ideal setting for pre or postscreening receptions. Hire features: HD-capable projector Microphones Technical support provided by SPACE students Film & Photo Shoots SAC has served as a film location for movies, television shows, music videos, and commercials, as well as for portrait, catalogue, and high fashion photo shoots. Hire features: Theatrical lighting and sound equipment Black flooring; Access to restrooms, change room, and shower Events SAC s attractive architecture and beautiful interior spaces with high ceilings make it a popular venue for a variety of events, including fashion shows, product launches and showcases, cocktail receptions and parties, small to mid-size weddings, and multi-space functions. 4

Venue Hire Rates do not include: Charges for Electricity (heating and lighting). You will be invoiced for your electricity use at the end of your hire period. Charges are approx. 33 cents per metered unit for lighting / $5.50 per hour for heating Additional Cleaning. Charged at $30.00 per hour SAC Technician. Charged at Award Rates $28.00 per hour (approx.) Recording allowance of $100.00 for each SAC Technician working on a show that is recorded for broadcast or distribution Use of Projector and Screen ($100 per day / $300 per week) Use of Dance Surface (Tarkett), Charged at $400 per hire, includes labour to lay, tape and remove tape. Hire of Additional Equipment Any additional lighting or sound requirements must be provided by the Hirer, in consultation with the Venues Technician, or negotiated for hire with the Venues Technician. 6
Conditions of Hire Bar Operation Salamanca Arts Centre holds a licence for the sale and serving of alcohol. SPACE will run a bar for the opening night of Peacock Performances and Events. Cleaning SAC cleans the theatre and associated areas on a daily basis. Any additional cleaning is the responsibility of the Hirer. Cleaning equipment is provided and cleaning must be completed to the satisfactory of SAC. If SAC requires additional cleaning the Hirer will be charged $30.00 per hour for the additional cleaning. The stage area, auditorium, dressing room, toilet, shower, technical box, entrances, passageways and foyer must be kept clean and free of refuse at all times. The Hirer shall remove all refuse at the end of the hire period. Friday Night Events There is a live music event (Rektango) in the SAC Courtyard adjacent to the Peacock Theatre every Friday evening between 5:30pm 7:30pm. Due to the sound bleed between the two venues, Peacock Theatre Hirers must commence their performances no earlier than 8:00pm on Friday evenings. Front of House & Ticketing SPACE will run box office for all Peacock Events. Hirers will be required to meet all marketing deadlines. Pre-sales will be available on the SAC website. The Peacock Box Office will be open: Tuesdays from 12-2pm Fridays from 4-7pm Front of House will be staffed 45min before each performance. Please note the following ticketing requirements: Industry rate An industry and artist discount must be available for at least one performance in your season. This rate is available to industry employees and SAC Associate members. Companion cards The Companion Card is accepted for all Peacock Theatre performances. The Companion Card is issued to residents of TAS with a significant and permanent disability that are unable to participate in most communitybased activities without significant assistance. The Companion Card admits carers to performances as complimentary guests. Reserved House Seats SAC reserves the right to 2 x House Seats at every performance / event during the Hirer s season. If SAC has not confirmed the reservation of the House Seats by 12:00noon on the day of the performance / event, the Hirer may release the seats for sale. Heating The auditorium of the theatre has both underseat heating and stage black-heat. The Hirer will be charged for all heating used during the hire period. Insurance The Hirer shall provide insurance cover for Public Liability and for all goods and effects brought on to the premises by the Hirer and the Hirer s representatives. Evidence of Public Liability Cover (At least $10 million) is to be provided to SAC prior to the commencement of hire. 7
Noise Salamanca Arts Centre reserves the right to cancel any performance causing excessive noise or showing lack of consideration for the general public, other hirers or tenants of the Centre. Painting It is possible to negotiate the painting of certain areas of the theatre and such negotiations may incur payment of an additional bond. All painted areas are to be returned to their original condition and the Hirer shall be responsible for both the painting and the cost thereof. The Hirer shall ensure that the rock wall, the auditorium seating and all other fixtures and fittings are covered and protected during the painting. Painting of the rock wall is not permitted. Performance Rights The Hirer shall take total responsibility for the securing and payment of all rights, including but not limited to, Writers Royalties and Musicians Royalties to the Australasian Performing Rights Association. Posters Promotional material may be placed in the notice boards throughout the Centre prior to the hire period and in the Peacock Theatre throughout the duration of the hire period. The Hirer must remove this material at the end of the hire period. No material may be fastened to any stonework or the facade of the buildings. Promotional Material The Hirer will be contacted by SPACE staff prior to the commencement of the hire period in regards to providing publicity information for the SAC website, enews and Social Media. The Hirer will be required to meet all SAC publicity and marketing deadlines. The Hirer must include the SAC and SPACE Logos and the correct address of the theatre on all printed and digital promotional material. The SAC Logo can be supplied by the SAC Venues Coordinator upon request. Hirers must lodge 4 copies of posters, programs, fliers and other relevant promotional material with the SAC Venues Coordinator prior to the commencement of the hire period. These materials are for the State Library and the SAC Archive. Safety & Security A SAC AUTHORISED PERSON SHALL BE ON SITE FOR THE DURATION OF THE EVENT (usually this will be the Peacock Theatre approved Technician). At the commencement of the hire period, the Hirer will be issued with a set of keys and instructed in security and safety procedures. All doors are to be secured at the end of each day and all lights are to be turned off. Fire exits and common passageways are to be kept clear at all times. See the Operations Manual for security details. Smoking Salamanca Arts Centre is a non-smoking complex and smoking is strictly prohibited. The Hirer shall ensure that all those associated with the production and all members of the public comply with this condition. Statistics Reporting Hirers are required to provide SAC with statistics at the end of their hire, including the number of paid and free attendees to their events, and the number of artists involved. Hirers will be issued with a Statistics Request form to compete at the end of their hire period. All statistics are collated annually in the SAC Annual Report and used for various purposes by SAC. 8
Technical Equipment All lighting equipment and basic audio equipment will be available to the Hirer upon arrival. Additional audio equipment, such as microphones, will be signed over by the Venues Technician. Additional audio equipment should be returned to the Venues Technician. All technical and electrical equipment brought onsite by the Hirer must have current tag and test certification and pass a visual inspection by the Venues Technician. Technical Staff ONLY APPROVED PERSONNEL MAY OPERATE THE EQUIPMENT WITHIN THE PEACOCK THEATRE ONLY. A technician approved by Salamanca Arts Centre is to be in attendance throughout the bump in / bump out and performance. If you do not have a SAC Approved Technician, SAC will provide an approved technician for you and you will be charged for their time at Award Rates. The Venues Technician will attend for WHS induction and venue induction during office hours, Monday to Friday, but otherwise will be charged to the Hirer at Penalty Rates. SALAMANCA ARTS CENTRE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO INSIST ON A TECHNICIAN OF ITS CHOICE TO OPERATE EQUIPMENT AT ALL PERFORMANCES. Use of Spaces SAC reserves the right to use the Peacock Theatre and associated areas for other purposes at such times as the Hirer shall not be using the spaces and by mutual agreement, in such a manner that secondary use shall not interfere with the Hirers use. 9
