PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: 14 June 2013 Hong Kong Philharmonic s Rachmaninov Cycle Concludes - Macedonia s National Treasure Simon Trpčeski Returns to Perform the Fourth Piano Concerto (21&22 June) Perry So Leads HK Phil in The Rock and Symphony No.1 [14 June 2013, Hong Kong] Hong Kong Philharmonic s multi-year Rachmaninov Cycle reaches its conclusion with Masterworks: Trpčeski's Rachmaninov starring the legendary Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski, who will be performing the Fourth Piano Concerto alongside the HK Phil under the direction of conductor Perry So. Rachmaninov s Fourth Piano Concerto was composed in the United States and includes more than a hint of New York jazz energy. The initial failure of his First Symphony famously scarred its composer for years, but more recently it has been recognized for its many spine-tingling and emotionally-charged moments. His gothic tone poem The Rock opens the concert in dark and mysterious style. Masterworks: Trpčeski's Rachmaninov will be held on 21&22 June 2013 (Fri & Sat), 8PM in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. Tickets priced: $400, $300, $220, $140 are now available at URBTIX. Free Pre-concert talks given by Music Educator and Composer Stefan Au (Fri, 21 June) in English and Mr Calvin Lai, Radio Presenter (Sat, 22 June) in Cantonese will be held at 7:15pm, at the 4/F Foyer of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Auditoria Building. For Enquiries, please call 2721 2030 or visit www.hkphil.org 21 June performance is sponsored by Jones Lang LaSalle Artists Perry So, conductor [full biography] Perry So received the first and special prizes at the Fifth International Prokofiev Conducting Competition held in St Petersburg in 2008, only the third time the top prize has been awarded. In 2010 he completed an extended nine-week residency with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducting four concerts and assisting Gustavo Dudamel, Lorin Maazel and Herbert Blomstedt, resulting in immediate re-invitation. Perry has appeared with the London Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Royal Danish Theatre, Milwaukee Symphony, Japan, Seoul and Malaysian Philharmonics, Singapore Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra Taiwan, New Zealand, Queensland and Asturias Symphony, Zagreb Philharmonic

and the State Symphony Orchestra of Russia. Perry So was Assistant Conductor (2008-2010) and Associate Conductor (2010-2012) of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He also founded and directs the Huangshan International Music Festival, set in the mountains of central China. Simon Trpčeski, piano [full biography] Simon Trpčeski has established himself as one of the most remarkable young pianists to have emerged in recent years, performing with many of the world s greatest orchestras and captivating audiences worldwide. Born in the Republic of Macedonia in 1979, Trpčeski has won prizes in international piano competitions in the United Kingdom, Italy and the Czech Republic. March 2010 saw Trpčeski s concerto recording début on the Avie label, showcasing Rachmaninov s notoriously challenging Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 3 with Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. The album was in the Top 10 of both the Billboard Classical Chart and the UK's specialist classical chart, and additionally won Diapason d Or de l année and Classic FM s Editor s Choice Awards. Trpčeski s recent seasons have featured a robust schedule of orchestral and recital performances, including the completion of a Rachmaninov Piano Concerto cycle with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, his début with the China Philharmonic and Guangzhou Symphony orchestras, his Carnegie Hall recital début, and recitals in Paris, Hong Kong, London, Milan and Florence.

In 2013/14 the HK Phil will celebrate its 40th professional season, but its roots stretch back well over a century. The HK Phil has now evolved into an orchestral powerhouse of the region, and an acclaimed cultural centrepiece of Asia s World City.
