Remember The simple past & the present perfect My grandmother gave me the ring when I was 18. We use the simple past to talk about past actions and events which are completely finished. If we say when something happened, we always use the simple past. Have you ever been to a Sting concert? We use the present perfect to talk about things that have happened sometime before now. It is not important when. It is only important that they have happened. The ring has been in the family for three generations. p. 143 We also use the present perfect to talk about situations that began in the past and have continued until now.
