The Friends of the Paul Sawyier Public Library Newsletter Spring 2003 Volume 1, Number 1 THE FRIENDS ARE BACK! After several years of rest, The Friends of the Paul Sawyier Public Library (PSPL) are back in action. The Friends group was formed in the summer of 1976, primarily to assist in the relocation of books and equipment from temporary quarters to the current location on Wapping Street. After the move, the group began to provide financial and programming support for the library. The first book sale sponsored by Friends was held 25 years ago, in April 1978. In 1987, Friends undertook a major fund-raising effort, including a radiothon, to create a new children s room on the second floor of the library. Friends became inactive after 1989. Last fall, a small group led by Carolyn Thalman, with the full support of the PSPL Director Donna Gibson, decided it was time to bring Friends back. In November 2002, Friends elected new officers who quickly went to work. Friends Board Members President Cecilia Broadwater First Vice President Walter Smith Second Vice President Carolyn Thalman Secretary Sandy Magel Treasurer Jules Delambre Directors Carol Baughman Mildred Browning Mary Cheek Mary Clay Mary Lynn Collins Scott Hankla Ann Howard Jenny Luscher Donna Seals Marguerite Wordell For more information on Friends or the PSPL, check out http://www.pspl.org/ and http://www.pspl.org/friends/. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF FRIENDS Dear Friends, For me, this has been a long, hard winter. Thankfully, each March day brings me new surprises: my pansies are blooming, my Jane Magnolia blossoms are opening, and the songs of the birds waken me early each morning. So it is with The Friends of the Paul Sawyier Public Library. The group has been dormant, but now we are springing back into action. We all love books and the library, or we would not be involved. I ask you to seek to be an advocate for this place we value so much no matter where it is or what it looks like. There is so much we can do: read our newsletter; come to meetings; contact the officers; encourage your friends to join; and, most of all, offer to volunteer. As good as the Paul Sawyier Public Library and its staff are, we can make it even better. Thanks so much for your interest and your support. Sincerely, Cecilia S. Broadwater President, The Friends of the Paul Sawyier Public Library

FRIENDS ASSIST IN THE PAUL SAWYIER PUBLIC LIBRARY BOOK SALE One of the first initiatives to be undertaken by the newly activated Friends of the Paul Sawyier Public Library was to assist the library staff in the week-long book sale held in January. The library sold discarded books and other materials from its own collection. As will be the practice in future book sales, a Friends Preview Sale was held the day before the public sale. Friends who donated their time included Pat Badgett, Carol Baughman, Cecilia Broadwater, Mary Cheek, Mary Lynn Collins, Alice and Jules Delambre, Joe Fiala, Ann Howard, Ruby Layson, Jane Lucas, Jenny Luscher, Judy Rydman, April Rogers, Rebekah Schillhahn, Donna Seals, Grace Sebastian, Carolyn and Robert Thalman, Walter Smith, Norm Snider, and Michelle Wagoner. Several Friends selected and purchased box loads of books that were donated to the Bald Knob Elementary School. Some of the remaining books were also taken to the Frankfort Career Development Center. The library made approximately $1,700 from the sale. Proceeds will be used to purchase DVDs. How YOU can help with the Book Sale in May: Donate books and other items for the sale; Volunteer to help at the sale or with children s activities (we will be contacting you); Let your friends and neighbors know about the drop-off dates to donate books; Let your friends and neighbors know about the sale; And come SHOP for yourself! IN CIRCULATION Did you know that in recent months the PSPL has added a significant number of magazines to its collection? An article that appeared on March 9, 2003, in The State Journal in Frankfort caught our attention. Frough Sherwani, an environmental engineering assistant from the Kentucky Division for Air Quality and a native of India, was at the library when a reporter interviewed him. During the interview, he said that he was impressed that a public library in a small Kentucky town would have the India Today magazine in its periodical room. In 2003, PSPL added 34 new periodicals to its collection. In addition to India Today, the new periodicals include: American Patchwork & Quilting Ancestry Magazine AARP Archaeology Arthur Frommer s Budget Travel Better Homes & Gardens (Wood) Better Investing Book:Magazine for the Reading Life Christianity Today Diabetic Cooking Ellery Queen s Mystery Magazine Family Tree Magazine Foxfire Magazine Guideposts (Large Print) Guideposts for Kids Guideposts Horse Illustrated Latina The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction Mosaics NASCAR/Winston Cup Illustrated Newsweek (en Español) Nuts & Volts People Weekly (en Español) Popular Home Automation Romantic Times Magazine Simple Scrapbooks Southern Accents Stock Car Racing Time for Kids (News Scoop) Time for Kids (World Report) Veggie Life Wild Animal Baby The current issues of the library s magazines are available for browsing; the back/older issues are available for checkout. (Patrons can literally check out the periodicals.) So, the next time you are at the PSPL, check out the periodical section! Friends, Please share this newsletter with your friends, neighbors, relatives, and co-workers... and anyone else who may be interested.

BOOKNOTES What Are You Reading These Days? RUSS HATTER, Assistant Curator of Historic Sites, City of Frankfort The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold I thoroughly enjoyed it, would recommend it. Jack the Ripper by Patricia Cornwell The author believes she knows who Jack was! The Great Meadow by Elizabeth Madox Roberts This novel was written in 1930 and is about the early settlement of Kentucky. Until the Day Break by Robert Burns Wilson This book is set in the Vest-Lindsey House in downtown Frankfort. There is one chapter in the book that is as scary as any in a Stephen King novel. ROGER CRITTENDEN, Franklin Circuit Judge Breakfast Epiphanies by David Anderson It is a collection of short sermons or thoughts by an Episcopal minister. John Adams by David McCullough It is very readable and increased my admiration for the founding fathers of the United States. Shopgirl by Steve Martin My wife and I read this (audio version) on a recent trip. This was on a CD from the library and read by Steve Martin. It is an entertaining novella. The books-on-tape collection at the library is a great resource. I have been introduced to several writers on tape and returned to check out other books by these authors.
