Organization of Knowledge LIS 703-03 Assignment #3 OCLC & MARC Bibliographic Format Beth Loch February 11, 2012

The MARC record search by OCLC number brought up the correct record the most directly with only one record as a result for both of the two searches. Four matches resulted in a search by ISBN number for The Coffee Trader. When searching for The Coffee Trader through a title search, the search had six record matches. A search for the record by author (Liss, David) resulted in even more possible records, 462. While a 30 Days of Night search by ISBN number resulted in seven records. Then, a title search matched 186 records covering five different formats. A search by author (Lebbon, Tim) resulted in 169 possible records. The results show that OCLC record number followed by ISBN number, then title, and finally author are the most to least direct search options. In completing a direct search, it is best to search for terms that have the least amount of data possible. Each MARC record only has one OCLC record number, that number is specific to one record, which is why it is the best criteria to search for. There were multiple records for both titles when each record was searched author and title. The multiple records were a result of different forms of the text. The easiest way to determine which was the record I was actually searching for was by the OCLC record number. I matched that number to the assignment to be sure to have the correct two records. However, if the OCLC record number was unknown, there are other ways to narrow the results. The search hits can be displayed in two ways: a truncated screen and a brief view screen. The brief view screen is more helpful because it provides more detailed information about each record. You can match the information that is known about the book (edition, language, etc.) to the information in the brief view screen. Another way to find the best record is to look at the number of records created for each holding and pick the most numerous to get a good record. 1
