Eynsford Concert Band A Christmas Festival Conducted by Mike Smith Sunday 20 th December 2015 The Mick Jagger Centre, Dartford

A Warm Welcome We are delighted you have chosen to join us for our 2015 Christmas Concert which promises to be a veritable feast of festive music. If you re not already fully in the Christmas mood I am confident that by the end of tonight s performance you most certainly should be. This evenings concert brings to a close another excellent year of music making for Eynsford Concert Band (ECB) members and hopefully music listening for our audiences. Our 2015 concert season began back in March with a memorial concert at Gad s Hill School, Higham, followed quickly by our very successful Inventions themed Spring concert here in Dartford. We concluded our year as National Concert Band Champions in June by performing as the main act at the gala performance of this year s National Concert Band Championships in Canterbury. A programme of music was carefully selected to showcase the band s talent which obviously impressed some in the audience as the band was subsequently invited to represent the UK at the European Championships for Wind Orchestras taking place in Utrecht, Holland in May 2016. Not bad for a band based in a little village in North Kent. In late August ECB again provided the music for the annual 1812 Fireworks Concert in Swanley to another bumper crowd. We then travelled up to Doncaster over the August Bank Holiday weekend to perform with our friends of the Doncaster Concert Band. Bar takings in the band s hotel in Doncaster broke all records and resulted in the following days performance at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park (yes there is one) featuring a number of very quiet pieces so not to wake the band s Chairman who, it is said, had forty winks during some of the pieces. 2

In November the band provided the musical support for the Remembrance Service in Sevenoaks at the town s war memorial and then renewed our friendship with the Band of the Grenadier Guards for our third combined concert in Sevenoaks School entitled For Queen and Country. A marvellous concert was enjoyed by a very appreciative audience which has resulted in almost 18,000 being raised for SSAFA over the 3 concerts. Earlier in December we returned to Sevenoaks for the annual St Nicholas Church Christmas Celebration and finally we return to Dartford for tonight s concert. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank all members of ECB and the committee for all their hard work throughout the year. Our rehearsals on Tuesday evenings are a highlight of my week, there is always something happening that keeps me smiling. Honestly. 2016 is already lining up to be a Christmas cracker of a year, and who knows, we might even become European Wind Band Champions! We look forward to seeing you all again in the new year but in the meantime, on behalf of the chairman and all ECB members, I wish you all a very happy Christmas, a peaceful new year and hope you enjoy tonight s concert. Mike 3

Valence School, Westerham, caters for students aged 4 to 19 who have physical disabilities and complex medical needs. We have both day and boarding places. Exceptionally high quality specialist teaching, social care and health care is provided by a staff and nursing team of over 200 people. Our overall aim is to enable every child and young person to achieve meaningful independence, providing support to enable students to achieve functional communication, mobility and skills for daily living. Students flourish in a supportive but challenging environment, making good educational progress and achieving a range of accreditation as they get older. Friends of Valence is the registered charity associated with the school for the purpose of raising funds for, supporting and promoting the good work of Valence School. Every student, parent and family member automatically becomes a member of the Friends of Valence School and remains a Friend when the student leaves. Funds raised are used to pay for extra-curricular activities, specialist therapy and sporting equipment as well as prizes and gifts for students. In addition the charity contributes towards capital projects that directly benefit the students when state funds are not available. Throughout the school year we are very fortunate to benefit from individual projects and sponsored events organised by families, individuals and groups associated with the School. We are thrilled that Eynsford Concert Band has chosen Friends of Valence as its nominated charity for 2016. Any funds raised by the band will go towards agreed projects at the school. One such project will be helping to the fund Father Christmas gifts next December. Christmas is an important time of year at Valence School and our tradition includes each student being given a gift by Father Christmas. Each gift is to the value of 20 and, with 100 students, the 2000 needed can only be funded through our charity. It is good to know that you and Eynsford Concert Band will be helping to put a smile on each of our student s faces next Christmas. 4

O come, all ye faithful 1. O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; come and behold him, born the king of angels: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord 2. God of God, Light of Light, lo, he abhors not the Virgin s womb; very God, begotten not created: O come 3. Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, sing, all ye citizens of heav n above; glory to God in the highest: O come 8

Hark! The herald angels sing 1. Hark! The herald angels sing glory to the new-born King; peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled: joyful all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies, with the angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem. Hark, the herald angels sing glory to the new-born King. 2. Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord; late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin s womb! Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, hail the incarnate Deity! Pleased as man with us to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark, the herald 3. Hail the heaven-born Prince of peace! Hail the Sun of righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings: mild, he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die, born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth. Hark, the herald 9

Committee Matters That man at the back. Cast your eyes towards the back of the band beyond the rugged good looks of the conductor, the understated glamour of the clarinets and the pure elegance of the bassoons. There you will find the Tuba section the bedrock of the band. The Tubas are not just important for their boyband good looks and subtle musicality they also house the man that makes everything tick for Eynsford Band, our chairman Brian Bennett. Brian has been behind a period of unprecedented success for the band over the last four years. He s helped us find our great musical director, taken us to success in competition (we were National Champions, don t you know!) and now he proudly leads us into Europe. Being Chairman of Eynsford Concert Band is not easy. Yes..OK..there are the cocktail parties, the yachts, the two free passes to Lullingstone Villa, but, most of the time, it s a thankless job. Just imagine the effort required to get all those strange people in front of you to turn up on time, at the right place, with the right instruments, sober. Brian has worked tirelessly over the last few years to help us achieve that and so much more. Yet he rarely gets the thanks he deserves, so this note acts as a tribute to him from the members of the band he so diligently looks after. We are lucky to have him - what was a tragic loss for the Pine Furniture industry has turned out to be a great capture for us. So, if you see him at the interval, please join us in saying thanks otherwise he ll be quite happy making everything work, without any fuss.. just that man at the back 10
