Middletown Township Summer Reading for Second Grade Students Entering Third Grade Summer 2013 Dear Parents and Guardians, Is your child up for a challenge this summer? Help your child increase his or her reading fluency and comprehension skills by encouraging recreational reading! We are challenging all students moving from Grade 2 into Grade 3 to read for a total of at least 20 minutes a day this summer. Reading before bed, in the car, on the airplane, by the pool, or at the beach is a great way for children to gain or retain reading skills. Remember that any form of reading is beneficial. You can read to your children, have them read to you, or read together in addition to independent reading. Books on this list are suggestions. You are welcome to add to this list! If a book is too hard for your child to read alone, consider reading it aloud to your child instead. Reading aloud to children increases their knowledge of vocabulary and shows them that you value the importance of reading. The Tracking Sheet provided asks students and parents to record a favorite book title, author, and minutes read for each week during July and August. Because this program is reliant on the honor system, we would ask that parents please initial after each reading session. There is also a Five Star Read activity included that your child will need to complete, based on one of his or her favorite books. Students will need to return their Tracking Sheet and Five Star Read activity sheet to their 2013-2014 teachers on the first day of school in September. All work will be reviewed during the first few weeks of school. In addition to the reading requirements, we have included a Summer Literacy Calendar for July and August with suggested activities for you and your family to enjoy. Sincerely, Please Note If you need extra tracking sheets - please visit our website at: www.middletownk12.org The Middletown Township Summer Reading Committee Summer Reading Update As a result of feedback we received last summer, we have revised our reading lists and assignments. There are many more choices and only one required writing activity. The Middletown Public Library has a variety books from our suggested list and has collaborated with us to also offer similar books as alternatives to the specific books on the list. We thank them for their support! We hope all of our students will enjoy reading books that are engaging, informative, and aligned with their interests.

Was it a story that you want to tell the students in your new class about? Do you want to tell your new teacher all about it? Could you read it over and over again and not get bored? Well, that sounds like a FIVE STAR READ! Here s your chance to share your favorite summer reading book with the students in your new class by writing your own book review.
