Aleris is a world leader in high-quality aluminum products for aerospace, automotive and industrial applications. Deepwater horizon IMDb: 7.5/10 On April 20th 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing several crew members and causing the largest oil spill in U.S. waters. In the film adaptation of these tragic events, Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg) and his colleagues find themselves fighting for survival as the heat and the flames become stifling and overwhelming. This epic thriller is currently being played at the cinemas and is an absolute must-see for every chemical engineer! There will be blood IMDb: 8.1/10 Silver miner Daniel Plainview leads a hardscrabble life with his son. When he hears about oil oozing from the ground near the Western town of Little Boston, Daniel takes his son on a mission to find their fortune. A story of family, religion, hatred, oil and madness, focusing on a turn-of-the-century prospector in the early days of the business. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, winning Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis. It is now regarded as one of the greatest films of the 2000s! 4 Aleris, with its head quarters in the U.S. city of Beachwood, Ohio, has 14 production locations strategically spread across three continents and a total of 5,000 employees. Aleris Aluminum in Duffel, with 950 employees, is part of this international group and one of the largest producers of high-quality rolled products. The plant distinguishes itself by applying advanced technology. Joke Segers first work experience: My first introduction to Aleris was during my internship in 2012. Then, once I finished my degree, I was offered a job as Metallurgical Engineer in the Product & Process Technology department. My job is primarily focused on developing anodising qualities. This means I have to select the appropriate alloy for high-end decorative and architectural products and define a specific production route for this. The emphasis is not just on quality but also on sustainability and profitability of the product and the production method. I also work on solutions to problems that arise during the production process or with finished products. In doing so, I not only have contact with the various departments within Aleris, but also with numerous domestic and international customers. Thankfully, I can always count on tips from older colleagues and workers with years of experience. The variety in my range of duties guarantees this job is and remains a challenge. But the biggest advantage to a job like this is that you re closely involved with the products that you have developed yourself. You see the results of your work everywhere: aluminum suitcases sold at the airport, the wall covering at tube stations in London, prestigious buildings all over the world that are covered with anodised aluminum panels That gives you a tremendous sense of satisfaction. 9
Photo page Pasta Evening 2016 Black Gold a.k.a. Day of the Falcon IMDb: 6.7/10 Set in the 1930s Arab states at the dawn of the oil boom, the story centers on a young Arab prince torn between allegiance to his conservative father and modern, liberal father-in-law. With Antonio Banderas in a leading role, this movie provides an exceptional glimpse into the Middle-East as it is one of the most expensive films in Arab history! Syriana IMDb: 7.0/10 The Middle Eastern oil industry is the backdrop of this geopolitical drama starring Jeffrey Wright, Matt Damon and George Clooney. An American lawyer is in charge of facilitating a dubious merger of oil companies, while an energy analyst experiences both personal tragedy and opportunity during a visit with Arabian royalty. Interesting fact: George Clooney received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as CIA operative Bob Barnes. October sky IMDb: 7.8/10 This true story was based on the life of Homer Hickam, a coal miner s son who was inspired by the first Sputnik launch to take up rocketry against his father s wishes. A must-see for the materials sciences as it portrays the mining industry as well as the aerospace applications of different alloys. And with young Jake Gyllenhaal in a leading role there is even some eye candy! 8 5
