BBC Breakfast Studio MediaCity, Salford The first all-led low energy studio in the UK The BBC was relocating its nation-wide morning news show, Breakfast, from its London base to the new Media City in Salford, Manchester. The programme came from a 400m² studio fully equipped with motorised hoists in London, but was to move into a small office-style studio. The building was designed with an air conditioning system providing a cooling capacity of only 15kW.This complicated the lighting design because the studio s low ceiling height was restricted further by the installation of the house air conditioning system. A number of possible options were considered before LSI s specialists suggested using an complete low-energy lighting rig, including 40 Watt and 90 Watt tungsten colour temperature low-energy LED fixtures. This made BBC Breakfast the first completely LED-lit studio to be launched in the UK by a national broadcaster.
News Studio London A major international news organisation is building an advanced news studio facility in London. In addition to the supply and installation of the lighting grid and luminaires, LSI also provided the lighting control system. This is required to interface with BNCS which is being used to control the production lighting console using OSC over TCP/IP. In addition, lighting cues can be recalled via the production automation system using Midi Show Control over TCP/IP LSI Projects worked with the end client s consultant to provide a technical solution that means various differing skilled employees can access and use the lighting system.
International News Studio complex, Middle East Having already completed several studios for this organisation, we were invited to supply and install a further two facilities, by a major multinational Systems Integrator. In addition to the supply and installation of a complicated lighting grid, the project also required a fully redundant lighting control network. This was achieved by networking multiple ETC Eos Titanium consoles in order to control 16,000 DMX addresses. The two consoles were capable of controlling multiple studio spaces from the same control room. By partitioning the lighting rig using Eos software, we were able to present a robust and simple system. The system revolved around a single primary RPU with its own dedicated backup RPU. These RPUs were situated in the Central Apparatus Room, and the consoles would simply client into the network where relevant. Network monitoring was provided by ETC Conductor, which permitted others to interface via the Building Management System.
The One Show, NBH, London Working with a major UK systems integrator, LSI Projects delivered and installed the lighting grid, control system, and luminaires for this popular weekday magazine show. The same studio is also used for other productions, including Film 2017. The studio lighting design was by LD Dave Evans who shares the driving of the show with fellow LD Stuart Gain, and is unusual as the lighting console is situated on the studio floor. This enable them to react quickly to changes in the fast paced live environment. The other factor are the floor to ceiling windows situated behind the presenters. This presented challenges in balancing light levels throughout the different seasons, as well as opportunities to highlight the piazza in front of New Broadcasting House
Sky News, London As part of an update to its news service Sky decided to build a new studio within the Sky Central building at its Osterley campus. The previous studio having served for over 15 years, a fresh approach was chosen; giving rise to floor to ceiling glazed walls on 3 sides. The studio itself is suspended on a cantilever over the main atrium, and offers great background views of the rest of the timber framed building. In order to provide a dynamic, and fluid presentation style, a giant videowall takes up the fourth wall of the studio. Remote cameras on special ceiling tracks (installed by LSI) mean the studio floor is completely clear, and allows the presenters to move around unhindered. Lighting within a glass box was a challenge, overcome by a skilful mechanical, electrical, and lighting design. This studio was the latest in a long line of production, event, and education facilities we have successfully completed for Sky.
