OGAM NOTES ercy Grainger s settings of the folk-music of various cultures are widely known to wind and conductors. Although he collected a numer of these melodies himself, he was equally willing to turn his attention to a melody collected y someone else. In the case of the resent setting, he neither collected the tune nor comosed the setting. Shee Shearing Song was collected in Somerset y the eminent English folk-musicologist Cecil Shar in 90 from the singing of William King. Eugene Goossens setting for solo iano of this melody aeared in 9 as the first of Two Ballades, O. 8 for solo iano, where it aears under the title olk Tune. Grainger and Goossens were art of a larger grou of musicians who met regularly from aout 906 onwards to rivately erform each other s music and offer encouragement. Goossens also articiated in the first all-grainger concert in May of 9, laying nd violin in the string quartet that erformed Molly on the Shore and Mock Morris. In 9, Goossens acceted George Eastman s invitation to conduct the newly formed ochester hilharmonic Orchestra, y which time Grainger was already an American citizen and a fixture on the New York music scene. In the 90s, during the years Grainger sent working with the National Music Cam in Interlochen, he increasingly focused his attention to imroving the reertory of music for wind and. One of the items that took his fancy was Goossen s setting of Shee Shearing Song, which romted Grainger to set the work for military and (the term used y British-trained and comosers to indicate a mixed wind and of woodwinds, rass and ercussion, as distinguished from the all-rass ands still heard today). Grainger s scoring was written uly to 6, 9 with arts coied at Interlochen. Uon his return to Sringfield, Missouri in Setemer, he wrote out the conductor s score. While Goossens harmonic treatment of the folk melody is not similar to what Grainger himself might have written, it is not altogether unlike Grainger s second setting (90) of Irish Tune from County Derry, distinguished from the earlier settings y featuring elastic scoring. EUGENE GOOSSENS Eugene Goossens was orn outside London on May 6, 89, and was the third memer of the family to carry that name. The family was of Belgian extraction and his father and grandfather were oth conductors efore him. [His father and grandfather selled Eugène with a grave accent; he himself did not. Nevertheless, Grainger ersisted in the use of the grave accent in his manuscrit arts, so that selling aears in the Southern Music Comany edition of olk Tune. ] Goossens studied music at the age of ten in Bruges, three years later in Liverool, and in 907 in London on a scholarshi at the oyal College of Music. He won the silver medal of the Worshiful Comany of Musicians and was made associate of the oyal College of Music. He was a violinist in Thomas Beecham s Queen s Hall Orchestra from 9 to 95. In 9 he decided to make conducting his career and founded his own orchestra. On une 7, 9, he gave the British concert remiere of Stravinsky s The ite of Sring at the Queen s Hall with the comoser resent. or nearly a quarter of a century, Eugene Goossens acceted ositions at U.S. orchestras. He conducted the ochester hilharmonic from 9 to 9, and from 9 to 96 he conducted of the Cincinnati Symhony Orchestra, succeeding ritz einer. One of the lasting imacts of his time in Cincinnati came during World War II. Goossens wrote to several comosers and commissioned 8 fanfares meant to suort the war effort. One of the fanfares that the orchestra received and remiered during the 9- season was Aaron Coland s anfare for the Common Man. Goossens sent nine years in Australia, from 97 to 956. He conducted the Sydney Symhony Orchestra and other grous, and was the director of the NSW State Conservatorium of Music. He held these ositions concurrently until March 956, when he was forced to resign after a major ulic scandal, only a year after eing knighted. Eugene Goossens returned to England and died on une, 96. ECY ALDIDGE GAINGE ercy Grainger was orn in Australia on uly 8, 88. In his asence, young ercy was doted uon y his formidale mother, the former ose Aldridge, who suervised every asect of his education. He was tutored at home, with a large art of his diet consisting of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles and the Icelandic sagas. ose Grainger was a eautiful woman with strong Nordic features (inherited y her son), ut like many eole of that day, she assionately disliked memers of other ethnic grous, and she instilled in ercy many outrageous notions.
