Eighth Note ulications The Moon Relected in Tin onds Traditional Chinese Arranged y Donald Coakley The Moon Relected In Tin onds as commissioned or the Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Concert Band, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to celerate the tenty-ith anniversary o the school. This school has a large Chinese oulation, and memershi in the senior and consists mostly o Chinese students. When I as asked to take on the commission, it seemed itting to rite a ork that soke to the Chinese culture. As the asis or the commission, I chose an ancient Chinese olksong that seaks o tragedy, and lost love. This setting o the olksong, makes no attemt to interret the narrative. Rather, it uses the olksong to create a ork that utilizes voices, grahic notation, and Chinese ercussion instruments in its realization. Noteorthy, among the Chinese instruments used in this setting, is the Erhu. The erhu is a to stringed violin held vertically on the knees, and layed ith a o, like the estern violin. I conductors have access to someone ho can lay this instrument, it ill rovide an aective, authentic and evocative addition to the erormance o The Moon Relected in Tin onds. In the event that this instrument is not availale, the irst ooe should lay the art. I no ooe is availale, then a solo clarinet can lay the art. The Moon Relected In Tin onds is conceived as an arch orm. The denouement is the longest art o the comosition. The outer sections o the comosition should have a relective quality. The REVIEW gliss in the timani art in the oening ars should e executed sloly ONLY over the last three eats in each ar in hich the instrument lays. At ar 22, the ells and vies arts should e layed as ast as ossile. Halay through ar 2, the seed should egin to gradually slo to the don eat o ar 1. At ar, the instructions to the trumets are clear. lay into stand. Deress the 2nd valve halay, and vary the seed o the hal valve trill. The glisses in the tromones that egin at ar 5 should relect the value o the note to e glissed. or examle, the irst note in the tromones at ar 5 is a quarter note. The seed o the gliss should relect that value. Read these instructions careully. At ar 6, the Chinese drums (ongos can e sustituted) should lay random rhythms that gradually get aster as the music moves to ar 67. At that oint, the rhythmic gestures should e layed very ast to the doneat o ar 78. The Chinese drums gradually slo don to the doneat o ar 80. This assage, rom ar 6 through ar 80, should e layed ignoring the / temo. It should e comletely imrovisational. Read these instructions careully. At ar 65, the xylohone and ells egin laying random eighth notes that also gradually get aster moving to ar 67. At ar 67, these instruments should lay as ast as ossile, then egin sloing at ar 78, as the music moves to ar 82. At ar 65, the Chinese gong, and Tam Tam should engage in a question and anser duel that gradually gets aster moving to ar 67. At ar 67, the question and anser duel should e layed very ast. This assage should e layed ignoring the / temo and e comletely imrovisational. rom ar 67 through ar 80, the timani glisses should e ast, then gradually slo don rom ar 78 through ar 80. The Chinese gong and Tam Tam egin to slo at ar 78, and end this assage on the doneat o ar 81. Again it is very imortant to note that, excluding the timani and vies, all the other instruments are imrovising. They should comletely ignore the / temo. In the case o the xylohone and orchestra ells, that instruction takes aect starting at ar 6, and continues to the doneat o ar 82. Eighth Note ulications The Moon Relected in Tin onds Traditional Chinese Arranged y Donald Coakley At ar 86, the second clarinets should lay ast, very sot trills on random notes in the lo register o the instrument. Memers o the section should trill on dierent notes. No attemt at consonance should e made. Rather, the aect should e a cushion o sound. The third clarinets do the same at ar 90. In oth cases, the hrase should e ended on the doneat o the aroriate ar. Only emale voices should sing eginning at ar 88, and ending at ar 11. Sing on an oo syllale. Brass instruments lo air through their mouthieces eginning at ar 122, then gradually increase the seed o the air through ars 12 and 12. At ar 125, the seed o the air should slo through ar 126, to the don eat o ar 127. At ar 125, the irst clarinets should lay ast, very sot trills on random notes in the lo register o the instrument. Memers o the section should trill on dierent notes. At ar 129, on cue, the clarinets should dro out one at time. At ar 126, each memer o the irst and second lute sections rus the rim o a crystal glass containing some ater. REVIEW The amount o ater in each glass should vary so that random ONLY itches are sounding. At ar 129, on cue, erormers should dro out, one at a time. The gliss in the tromones, on the doneat o ar 10, should e ast. The trumets should resond quickly, gradually diminishing to a doule iano. At ar 10, the Chinese ater gong should e loered sloly into a large container o ater, and sloly removed, hile a second erormer lays a continuous roll on the gong. In the inal ar, the ind chimes should sloly gliss uards. ISBN: 9781557261 CATALOG NMBER: CB2791 COST: $78.00 DRATION: 9:0 DIICLTY RATING:GRADE Concert Band.enmusic.com
