Aout the music or many years ohn urge as the accomanist, arranger and comoser or the Canta Arya School or Strings in Kingston, Ontario Directed y Karen Kimmett, this school has roduced some onderul young violinists and is keenly suorted y arents and volunteers Ater a grou o violinists o aroximately the same age had erormed the Vivaldi our Violin Concerto a numer o times, ohn urge as insired to comose his on our Violin Concerto or these same musicians The resulting three movements ere remiered searately ith iano accomaniment eteen 008 and 009 and the ork as recorded on the Canta Arya School's irst CD in une o 009 t as alays the comoser s intention to orchestrate this ork and ohn urge is very grateul to the Calgary Youth Orchestra and their Music Director, Edmond Agoian, or agreeing to remiere the ull orchestra version o this comosition ith their our est violinists in eruary, 0 While the ork may have een comosed or young musicians, it is air to state that the music has made very e comromises and is technically diicult, artistically challenging and sustantial in that it takes 5 minutes to erorm all three movements Underlying the irst movement is a reeated chord attern heard initially in the solo violins that rovides a kind o minimalistic aric that is requently used to accomany longer melodic gestures oth the oening thematic material and a more lyrical idea introduced later are develoed and rerised in a traditional irst- movement design that even includes a cadenza or all our soloists The second movement has a very ree structure that shits eteen slo chordal assages and longer melodic lines some o hich are layed in unison y all our violins The last movement is a light- hearted rondo that includes a ugal eisode that is oth rhythmically and dissonantly intense Aout the comoser Dr ohn urge ( 96) holds degrees in Comosition and Theory rom the University o Toronto (Mus and MMus) and the University o ritish Columia (DMA) Since 987 he has een teaching at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario here he is a ull roessor He has ritten a signiicant ody o vocal, chamer, and orchestral comositions ut he is articularly ell knon or his choral music Many o his choral orks have een ulished y oosey and Hakes Music ulishers His ork or SSA choir and orchestra entitled, Angels' Voices, received the 006 Outstanding Ne Choral Comosition Aard rom the Association o Canadian Choral Conductors and as erormed in Ne York City's Carnegie Hall in 005 Over the ast to decades, a numer o Canadian string orchestras have commissioned ohn urge to comose ne orks or their ensemle such that he has ritten a large numer o orks or strings Some o these comositions, such as Uer Canada iddle Suite, are amongst his most oular orks eing reeatedly erormed, recorded and roadcast The recording o his string orchestra iece, landers ields elections, y Sinonia Toronto on the Marquis Classics lael, received the 009 uno Aard or the est Canadian Classical Comosition A assionate advocate or Canadian music, he as a memer o the Executive o the Canadian League o Comosers rom 99-007, serving as resident rom 998-006 He has served as an aointed oard memer o the SOCAN oundation since 009
