EXHIBITION SEPTEMBER DISORDER By Corinne Mariaud 20 September 20 October 2018 ROCHOR #4, DISORDER SERIES 2017 DISORDER SERIES 2009 In her work, Paris-based artist and photographer Corinne Mariaud questions the image of women and their place in our contemporary society. The resistance of the individual, the diktat of appearance and clichés about femininity and masculinity are at the center of her photographic reflection. The Disorder series questions the relationship between the individual and the urban environment. Human bodies lie on the ground, sliding on urban matter. Within these images, people are stuck. Immobilized. Caught in the rigidity of the environment. As trees or fragments of green spaces are contained by architecture, man is framed by urban material. Characters seem anonymous, fragile bodies of a big commonness. However, by the strangeness of their postures, they uproot the usual order of things. Organic and corrosive, the supple bodies interrupt the geometric patterns of the image. The work of the artist thus expresses a kind of solitude, where the norm is not reassuring but constrains the individual to a form of violence towards him/herself. Meet-the-authors session comics and the World Wars In conversation with Cheah Sinnan and Régis Hautière Date: September 29, 2018 Time: 5.45pm Place : la médiathèque In English RSVP on AF website to secure your spot Enjoy a cocktail reception after the talk and catch the screening of Au revoir la haut. 2018 marks the centennial of the end of WWI. Many books and events have been written and organized to commemorate the Great War that failed to end all wars. But history books can only tell us so much. Comic books offer new ways of looking at WWI and WWII and the ravages of war. Comic book aficionados will enjoy this session featuring Singapore based artist Cheah Sinnan and French scriptwriter Régis Hautière. The discussion will be focusing on how comic book artists conceptualize the story and come up with characters, themes, etc. The talk will be moderated by Lim Cheng Tju, comic expert and country editor for the International Journal of Comic Art. Régis Hautière is a French comic book writer with an impressively eclectic bibliography; he has published many award-winning books. In early 2013, he teamed up with illustrator Hardoc to create the comic series, La guerre des Lulus. Cheah Sinann, currently based in Singapore is freelancing as a cartoonist, illustrator and writer. He is a former editorial cartoonist with The Straits Times, where he also produced the popular comic strip The House of Lim from the late 80s to the 90s. In 2014, Cheah wrote and drew a WWII story in the form of a graphic novel titled The Bicycle. Lim Cheng Tju is an educator & curator who writes about history and popular culture. His articles have appeared in the Southeast Asian Journal of Social Science, the Journal of Popular Culture and the Print Quarterly. Recently he wrote the Guidebook to Nanyang Diplomacy, a comic book about the Sepoy Mutiny that happened in Singapore in 1915, during WWI. In partnership with: Sponsored by:
