Program Note: is a double entendre on the term "ground bass," the coositional device o the seventeenth century, in which a series o variations occurs over a recurring bass line. The seven itches o this descending chromatic bass (B A# A G# G F# F) dier rom historical ractice with the addition o the inal itch (F), which obscures the tonic/dominant relationshi o B-F#. Unlike earlier reertoire (rom the keyboard works o Couerin and Frescobaldi to Beethoven's 2 Variations in C Minor and the inale o Brahms' Syhony #4, to name a ew exales), each itch o the chromatic bass is not assigned the same duration. This obscures the listener's ability to trace the ground bass line. The work is structured on a modiied sonata orm. The irst theme, rooted in the harmony o the chromatic bass, is an ascending gesture introduced by the solo cello at the onset o the work. The more distant and haunting second theme integrates the ground bass as a melodic line. This theme quotes the recitative that recedes Purcell's When I Am Laid in Earth (also known as "Dido's Lament"), rom his oera Dido and Aeneas, an aria requently reerenced in music history texts as an exale o ground bass, chaconne, and chromatic exressivity in late-seventeenth-century music. Develoment ensues, and the mirror recaitulation resents the two themes in reverse order. Uon arrival at the irst theme, the bass line is let uninished; the brass section continues its ascent, rising to a soaring conclusion. was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band, Washington D.C., as a ollow-on commission to Cathedrals, winner o the 2009 United States Air Force Arnald D.
