Music or Winds ROGRAM NOTES k I came to areciate Renaissance music much later in lie than some o my colleagues I aid the requisite attention in Music History class as an undergraduate, ut my head as simming in music y Barer, Coland, rokoiev, and Shostakovich to e comletely honest, the trials and triulations o trouadours and trouvères, and the intrigues o courtly dances did not interest me much That all changed hen I ran across a ind and setting o Renaissance dance music y Bo Margolis, atly titled Tersichore (Tersichore also eing the name o a collection o dance music assemled y German comoser Michael raetorius, and ulished in Wolenüttel, Germany, in 1612) Margolis suite dre rom several dances ound in the Tersichore, and is highly recommended or advanced ensemles looking or a challenge Around this time, I also discovered a onderul ork or strings entitled Cariol Suite y eter Warlock (a en name or hili Heseltine) This ork dre insiration rom another collection o Renaissance dance music, Thoinot Areau s Orchesograhy Not long ater discovering the Areau tome, atrick Dunnigan, Director o Bands at lorida State University, ulished his on Selections rom the Danserye, ased on yet another collection o Renaissance-era music, Tielman Susato s Het derde musyck oexken, etter knon as The Danserye My introduction to these three orks (and y extension, the three collections o dance music uon hich they are ased) all took lace ithin a year o each other, and the music simle, charming, elegant continues to ascinate and delight me In utting together this suite, I had a clear goal in mind: To rite something that ould not e terrily diicult in the hoes o making the suite accessile to most high school ind ands (and erhas even some daring middle school ands) To that end, most o the imortant arts in Tänz aus Tersichore (literally, dances out o Tersichore ) are cued in other instruments, and some o the more exotic instruments are otional (and also extensively cued) Many o the original meters have een transormed into time signatures that ill give eer rolems to a young ensemle (eg, 6/4 ecomes 6/8, etc) Not anting to coy hat Mr Margolis had already accomlished in his excellent ork, I took ains not to use the seciic dances he had reviously orchestrated, though they do remain some o my avourite music rom the Tersichore Hoever, in the end, I couldn t hel mysel, and comromised y setting some o those amous ancient melodies in the rie interludes eteen movements These interludes are otional, and are exlained in urther detail in the Interlude Score (included) Though this is a suite o music derived rom the Tersichore, I also couldn t hel ut include a nod to Warlock s and Dunnigan s settings, as oth inluenced me greatly It is my sincere hoe that this suite ill hel introduce the onderul music o the Renaissance to a ider audience The order o the movements (and the interludes) is comletely at the discretion o the conductor; the sequence in hich they aear here is merely a suggestion that seems to lo ell Sincerely, Nikk ilato k Coyright 2011 All Rights Reserved Nikk ilato nikknakksnet
Music or Winds Each movement o the suite ocuses on one orm o Renaissance dance, incororating the music o several o these tyes: Movement I is ased on the circle dances knon as Bransles (ronounced ran-slah ) The Bransle as a 16 th Century dance o rench origin, in hich the dancers move mainly rom side to side, and is erormed y coules in a line or a circle The style eventually migrated to Italy, Scotland, and Sain, ut curiously never ecame oular in England In his ritings, Areau strongly imlies that the Bransle as a dance mainly erormed y commoners The irst movement includes the olloing dances (in order o introduction): o Bransle doule 1 (XII) o Bransle doule 3 (XII) o Bransle simle 1: La, la, la, e ne l ose dire (I) Movement II is ased on the athletic, imrovised dances knon as Gaillardes (galliard in England, gagliarda in Italy) The Gaillarde as characterised y leas, ums, hos, and other similar igures In ritings o the eriod, it is suggested that the most imortant and deining asect o this dance as its last to eats, consisting o a large um, ith one leg landing ahead o the other in a osture In this suite, hoever, the irst o the Gaillardes has een transormed into a regal, stately intrada, giving ay to a more athletic dance to close out the movement I couldn t resist aying homage to Bo Margolis in this movement, articularly in the ercussive riting and the manner in hich the movement ends The second movement includes the olloing dances (in order o introduction): o Gaillarde (CCCVI) o Gaillarde (CCC) Movement III is ased on the Ballet, a dance that originated in the late iteenth century in Italy Originally a dance interretation o encing, the allet as develoed urther in the rench court during the seventeenth century, eventually alling into decline in the early nineteenth century It as reintroduced to Euroe y the Ballets Russes dance comany, headed y Sergei Diaghilev, ho also introduced many choreograhic and style innovations that oularised Ballet throughout the orld The third movement includes the olloing dances (in order o introduction): o Ballet (CCLXXIII) o Ballet de Monsieur de Nemours (CCLIII) o Ballet des Baccanales (CCLXXVIII) Movement IV is ased on La Canarie (XXXI), a curious entry in the Tersichore, as it aears to stand alone ithout much relation to any o the roader orms o dance encountered The dance as named or the Canary Islands, here it originated It has een set here as a call-andresonse Movement V is ased on the Courante, a tye o trile meter dance that as oular rom the late Renaissance eriod into the Baroque era As ith many o these dances, there ere to tyes: The rench Courante, a moderately ast dance ith many cross-accents tyically notated in 3/2 or 6/4, and the Italian Courante, hich as signiicantly aster and more ree-loing ( asolutely the most serious [dance] one can ind rote ohann Walther aout the rhythm o the Italian Courante) or the urose o this suite, the dance has een converted into more conventional meter signatures The ith movement includes the olloing dances (in order o introduction), ith the Courante CXXV eing used tice in altered orms o Courante (CXXV) o Courante: La Rosette (CIX) Coyright 2011 All Rights Reserved Nikk ilato nikknakksnet
