Volume 42 Issue 12 December 2016 As usual, with all the activity we will be DARK for December - there will not be a General Meeting but a dinner on December 10 th read on! First let me apologize. I got injured and rather than to do my club duties I sat and took rest. But a short 6 weeks later I am still not 100% - but who is at 100%?? But not to miss activities, everyone attended and enjoyed the Mullin Automotive Museum and the Canyon Theater performance of Around the World in 80 Days. I was sorry to miss those but the feedback was excellent. One thing I managed to attend was the Car Showing at St. Stephens. Their first but a good show nonetheless. But I must mention that they presented some good food choices which included a variety of CHILLY. One of our members brought his chilly and I taste tested them all. My conclusion was that the chilly provided by our club member Charlie Angelis was the best. It took me three trips to do the test but I would do it again. So December is here. We have two major activities in December and all are invited and will have a great time. December 10 th CHRISTMAS AND INSTALLATION DINNER PARTY. It will be held at the Coco s Restaurant (The Old Road at Pico Cyn in Stevenson Ranch). It will start with happy hour or get together hour at 6 PM. We will all order meals from the Coco s Menu so everyone can be picky as they wish. We will have door prizes and fun stuff for all. On December 15 th (a Thursday evening) we have our annual Christmas Homes Lights Tour. We meet at night fall (6 PM) with decorated cars and tour some of the finest decorated homes in the county. The tour takes just over an hour and we will end up at the Round Table Pizza in Newhall where the club will buy all the pizza you can eat (free). Just in case you forgot, our club dues are due! Cheap at $20 per family you will reap your rewards in cookies and pizza within a few months of the year. Actually due December 31th it is best to be early than late!! Arrival time is recommended at 6:00 pm and dinner will be at approximately 6:30 pm. There is no fee as you just order your choice from the Coco menu and pay for your own meal. Get what you want!! December 15 th Thursday evening, Christmas Home Lights Tour and free pizza. Meet in the parking area behind Walgreen s store which is located on Newhall Ranch Road at Bridgeport. You should arrive by 6 pm and you can decorate your car. We will leave at 6:30 pm for the tour. The tour takes over one full hour and we plan on arriving at the Round Table Pizza on Lyons Ave and Valley Street in Newhall. The club will be providing free pizza to all. We ask you to purchase your own drinks which can include soda, beer or wine. Wednesday Burger Night. (December 7, 14, 21 and 28th) we are at Wendy s Burger. Enjoy a full menu from burger to salad to ice cream in a peaceful and quiet evening at on Bouquet Cyn Road at Wendy s. Bring your collectible car. We are well represented come enjoy the food. We had a visit to the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard We attended the performance of Around the World in 80 Days at the Canyon Theater in Newhall. There was a car show at St. Stephen s and we had 4 cars. There was also a BREAKFAST at the Route 66 Cafe There were about 18 attending the breakfast and five collectible cars also attended. The 1940 Buick I owned a 1940 Buick. It was a Limited series 80 that was considered a baby limousine. While this car new sold for about $1700 it was far less that the same size automobile from Cadillac at about $2200. Cadillac complained to General Motors that this competition was too competitive. The Buick series 90 had a longer wheel base and was equipped with a window behind the driver and a telephone system to connect the passenger area with the driver. It was powered by a Straight 8 cylinder engine. It was smooth and powerful. The 1940 Buick sold over 278,000 cars. It was the third highest selling automobile in the United States. The Limited series shown above only 3,800 were manufactured. Buick s reputation and strength grew from their Straight 8 engine that was developed in 1931. They remained with the Straight 8 engine until the V-8 was introduced in 1953. The 1940 Buick had a wheelbase of 133 inches and weighed of 4,500 pounds. The Straight 8 engine was a 320 cubic inches and developed 141 horsepower. Also, this was the last year for the side-mounted spare tires and the famous running boards. The 1939 Buick was the first to have automatic turn signals placed on the right of the steering column (down was right turn and up was a left turn). An outstanding item by today s standards was what I believe to be the world s most unsafe jacking system to change a tire. This system placed a small lip of the jack onto the upper clip of the metal tire rim. You would then jack up the car (similar to a bumper jack) until the tire was off the ground. You then place a small bracket under the frame and the lower and removed the jack. The slightest vibration could easily cause the car to drop off the jack and strike anyone close by. The Buick engines were installed as follows: 1904 1911 Two cylinders horizontally opposed at 180 degrees, valves in each head, 159 cubic inches. 1907 1924 Four cylinders, in line, valves in head, 165 to 392 cubic inches. 1914-1930 Six cylinders, in line, valves in head, 191 to 331 cubic inches. 1931 1953 Eight cylinders, in line, valves in head, 221 to 345 cubic inches. 1904 Buick 1932 Buick 5
Christmas and Installation Dinner Party We celebrate the holidays and the install our new board of directors for the upcoming year 2017. The new club board will need your help, so come along and welcome them. Yes, it is the same board that you have seen for the last few years, but they still need your support. Coco s is located on the Old Road at Pico Canyon in Stevenson Ranch. You can choose off the menu for your choice of dinner. We have their special side room as we did last year. Come and enjoy your friends as the year will soon end. We like to bring our collectible cars decorated to enhance the experience and the joy of the season. Where: parking area behind Walgreen s Date: December 15 th a Thursday evening. When: arrive by 6 PM and decorate your car, we will leave on TOUR at 6:30 PM We will start our tour at 6:30 pm and as the tour takes just an hour or hour & half we will therefore arrive at the Round Table Pizza (23254 Lyons Ave at Valley Street). The club will be treating with FREE pizza for the evening. We ask you to purchase your own drinks (soft, beer or wine). They also have other items on their menu that you may wish to buy. 6
Turlock Swap Meet The biggest or bestest swap of the year. There is nothing in the automotive world that has not graced its presence at this swap meet. Our member (Ron Mosher) will be present. Look for his setup space. and if he does not have the part, he will now where it can be located. PS: he serves and excellent sandwich. A NEW AND INFORMAL CAR MEETING SPOT On every Saturday morning from 6:30 am to 8:30 am there is now a open house meeting area in our valley. Come to the parking lot adjacent to K-Mart (Valencia Bl at Bouquet Cyn) and meet with other automobile enthusiasts. Just meet to discuss and love all cars. It is called Coffee N Cars at it is in front of the Western Bagel Shop. No trophies and no entry fees. 7
