MagiCurrents San Diego Ring 76 March 2018 VOL. XXXII #3 President s Messsage Magical wishes to all of you in Ring 76 land. I hope you all enjoyed the close-up competition. We had only four participants, but they were all great shows. You saw Ken Intriligator, Mago Ruly, Joe Nespoux and Joe Mystic (that s meeee). Our next meeting is open mic nite (but with no mic). You can bring whatever you want to show us. I would like to see a lot of different presentations. Remember, you are not limited to just one effect, especially if it is short. This will also be a night of auditions for Ring 76. Let s all attend and see what our newcomers have for us. Think about volunteering in the upcoming elections. We need new people to help run this club. It doesn t take much time or effort and it includes a dinner during the Board meeting at the home of the nicest couple in Ring 76. It looks as if the Monthly Magic Monday at The Lot Restaurant in La Jolla is successful and will be continuing on a regular basis. I think it will be the 3 rd Monday in March at 7:00 pm. I hope to see as many of you as possible on March 12 at The SDMBB&SC, AKA the Boat Club. MagiCurrents March 2018 Page 2 Minutes of the Feb, 2018, Ring 76 Membership Meeting The meeting was held at the San Diego Mission Bay Boat and Ski Club. President Joe Mystic McGrievy called the meeting to order at 7:00pm. ANNOUNCEMENTS Dr. Jeff Pearson announced that the North County Magic Club meets on the first Thursday of every month at the Coco s in Vista, at 7:30pm. He brought some of their business cards for the club. Jeff also introduced his guest, Steven Yule, who is an accomplished magician. Ring Librarian, Kenny Shelton, brought a few DVDs from the Ring s collection which are available for members to check out. PROGRAM V.P. of Entertainment, Richard Ustick managed the rest of the meeting, which was the Ring s annual close-up contest. There were four ring members performing: Ken Intriligator, Joe Mystic, Joe Nespoux, and Mago Ruly. The attendees broke up into two groups, sitting at two large tables. Each performer did their routine (time limited to ten minutes), at both tables, in two groups of twos. Since your Secretary was one of the performers, detailed notes about the individual performances were not recorded. Joe Mystic performed mental revelations of multiple cards from a shuffled deck including Doc Zola s Match Trick and Bruce Cervon s Perpetual Motion Poker Routine. Joe Nespoux started with a spellbound coin routine (John Carney). Then he did a card case / deck transposition using the Misdirection deck gimmick (David Stone). This was followed by a signed torn-and-restored card routine using the gimmick TOOL (David Stone). He finished with the linking card routine (Osmosis, by Sylvain Mirouf) with some music. Ken s performance started with several coin effects and ended with finding a spectator s favorite thought-of cards by some counting or spelling using Mnemonicosis. Mago opened with the appearance of four aces. They were lost in the package and reappeared, with music. Next, a spectator chose a card, the 10C, and it was lost and then found! But, then, putting the case on the table the shamrocks became disordered. Next came a sponge ball routine and a card routine in which he uncovered the four aces and a chosen card turned into a jumbo version. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45, and many of us went to a diner in Pacific Beach for dinner, dessert, and camaraderie.... Ken Intriligator, Secretary Producer Craig Blackwood included several Ring 76 members in the cast of the second monthly Magic Monday held at the Lot in La Jolla. The show was held for dinner patrons in the 7:00 hour. Diners were also entertained by walk-around magic prior to the show. The next show is tentatively scheduled for Monday, March 19.

MagiCurrents March 2018 Page 7 Close-Up Winner to be announced in July In his February Marketing Magic column, Kent Cummins FOCUS ON THE addresses the subject of creating publicity photographs. He stresses the fact that having your photo where LINKING RING prospective customers can see it is not just so that they can recognize you in a crowd; Your image on business cards, flyers, the Web and other places likely to be seen by the public along with supporting text helps create their first impression of you. Quoting several well-known portrait photographers, Kent offers suggestions for establishing the specific persona you want the public to associate with you and how to incorporate that information in a portrait. editor

MagiCurrents March 2018 Page 8 SHAVINGS FROM THE BOARD MINUTES OF RING 76 BOARD MEETING February 27, 2018 The meeting was called to order by President Joe "Mystic" McGrievy at 7:25pm. The meeting had been postponed by one night to allow Board members to attend and participate in the second installment of Magic Monday at The Lot in La Jolla, organized by Ring member Craig Blackwood. Other board members present included: Secretary Ken Intriligator, Treasurer Bob Meigs, Second V.P. (Membership) James Thayer, and Member-at-large Robert Vinson. Absent were Sergeant at-arms John Hunter, Newsletter Editor and Member-at-large Malcolm Campbell (who is ill) and Librarian Kenny Shelton. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the January Board meeting were approved. (there was no December meeting) REPORTS Treasurer s report - Treasurer Bob Meigs presented his report to the Board. The only change was the fee for the meeting location. The report was approved by the Board. Library report - Kenny Shelton was absent, so there was no library report. Membership report - The Ring is still at 63 members. OLD BUSINESS February Meeting report There was discussion of the format of the close-up contest, whether it is better to have each performer do one performance for the entire group, or multiple performances for smaller groups. There was also discussion on how to encourage more participation. This is something for next year s board to discuss further. Exchanging Performances with The Long Beach IBM Ring - Richard has contacted the V. P. of Entertainment of their Ring about exchanging performances at each other s banquets.their board will discuss it this month. NEW BUSINESS Raffles - Upcoming meetings, including the upcoming banquet, will feature raffles of some items that the Ring has on hand. New Member Auditions - Several new members have not yet auditioned, and there was some discussion about how long members should be able to put off the audition (six months maximum was suggested) and also how long the audition should be (three to five minutes was suggested). Mentorship Program - Robert Vinson suggested that experienced professional magician members could help mentor the less-experienced members in performing. This could include helping new members to prepare their auditions. Also, there could be a performance competition among the mentees. The Board agreed that Robert should feel free to propose it to the members at the next Ring meeting, if he is willing to take-charge of overseeing it (and he is). S.T.E.M. Magic Show - Bob Meigs presented his lecture and show ideas, and the board agrees that it is of interest. Upcoming Meetings - March: Open theme and auditions for new members. Malcolm will give a lecture on developing new magic. April: Teach-a-Trick theme. May: Standup competition. The board is considering cancelling the competition if there are not at least four members entering. In that case, the meeting could be replaced with Bob Meigs lecture. Elections - The need to appoint the Election Committee by next month was discussed. The Board also needs to recommend a slate of officers. The board meeting adjourned at 8:32 pm. Ken Intriligator, Secretary

MagiCurrents March 2018 Page 9 UPCOMING EVENTS The March meeting will be a busy one. Malcolm Campbell is scheduled to present a lecture. He will be going over the process of developing a new piece of magic. We have several people interested in becoming members and they have yet to audition. We hope they will be ready for the March meeting. The March performance topic is "No Theme." Members are encouraged to participate and do whatever routines they wish. Members will vote on the officers for the following year in June. Close-Up Competition votes from the February Meeting have been tallied and the winner will be announced at the July Banquet. The Long Beach Ring has been invited to perform at our Installation Banquet in July. If they accept the invitation, Ring 76 members will provide the entertainment for their banquet. Bob Meigs has developed an interesting lecture on combining magic entertainment with science. On top of the educational aspects of this program, I see it as a way for members to develop shows appropriate for schools and other organizations. The Board will set a date for Bob to lecture the Ring on this idea. The Board will soon be setting the schedule for 2018-2019. If you have a request for a specific lecture or performance theme, please talk to a member of the Board or attend a Board meeting in the near future so your voice can be heard. Richard Ustick, V.P. of Entertainment ELECTIONS Election of Ring 76 Officers for the 2018-2019 fiscal year will be held at the June General Meeting. The new Board will be installed at the July Banquet. The schedule stipulated by the Constitution is as follows: March Board meeting - Nominating Committee finalized. If you wish to assume an opening on the Nominating Committee, please contact a Board Member. April Board meeting - Recommendations of the Board for the slate of officers sent to the Nominating Committee. May General Meeting - Nominations from the membership open. Contact a Board member. June General Meeting - Slate presented to the membership for vote. Nominations open prior to vote. July Banquet - New Board sworn in. You may submit your name for any position any time. However, you must have previously served a term on the Board in any capacity to be elected to the position of President of he Board.
