LVGA Member Spotlight Maliah Ellis Q: How long have you been doing Gymkhana? A: This is my second year of Gymkhana Photo credit: Joe Audino Q: What s your favorite event and why? A: My favorite event is barrels. It's challenging and I get to come home fast! Q: What is the best riding advice you ve gotten? A: Mrs. Sam, my instructor, and Chris Due, my friend, told me that over time, I will build a relationship with Sir Nickel and that I need to be able to trust my horse and he will trust and take care of me. Mrs. Sam teaches me as much about horses and caring for them as she does about riding. She tells me to compete with myself and not worry about anyone else and above all...to have good sportsmanship to others. She is always encouraging me and teaching me. But she also makes sure I never forget things I've learned from the very beginning. She is my very best grown up friend! Q: What do you want to do when you grow up? A: I want to be a professional barrel racer and a veterinarian. My favorite animals are horses and dogs. Q: What is your favorite activity outside of horses? A: Roller skating to music and I also love to sing. Q: How would you explain Gymkhana to a non-horse person? A: I guess I would tell them that we compete in three events at each gymkhana. That there is always a rotating" event that is different and challenging at the beginning. Then there is a poles event where we ride in and out of 6 poles and race home, followed by barrels where we race around three different steel barrels. Everything is timed and there are five second penalties for knocking over a pole or a barrel. But most of all I would explain that it is something your whole family can watch and experience. And I meet really nice people. And that you really have to know what you are doing because a horse is a large animal. There is so many things to remember just to turn your horse. 10 March 2018

LVGA Member Spotlight Shawna Stock Q: How long have you been doing Gymkhana? A: I started doing SNGA in 1987, on my first horse Angel. I was hooked after my first show. Photo credit: T Gilbert Photography Q: What s your favorite event and why? A: I love barrels, but I think my favorite is poles. It is the toughest event that you and your horse will have to learn. But once you two click, it s a beautiful thing. It really is a team builder and creates a strong bond between you and your faithful steed. Q: What has Gymkhana taught you? A: It has taught me to never give up, always keep trying. It s fun to win, but it s more fun when you enjoy doing what you love. Be in competition with no one but yourself or with your sister!! You re going to have good shows and not so good shows, but as long as you had fun, that s what is important. Tomorrow is a new day and your horse will be there waiting and ready for you. Q: What is your favorite activity outside of horses? A: I love to hike and spend time with my daughters Alexis, Ashlea and my two sons, Kalan and Colvin. And of course my two favorite gbabies, Alina and Nora. Q: How would you explain Gymkhana to a non-horse person? A: This is always a challenge. I usually say it is a timed event competition. Sort of like track. You have different events you compete in and try to do it in the least amount of time. 12 March 2018
