Few men have influenced the development of American English to the extent that Noah Webster did. Born in West Hartford, Connecticut, in 1758, his name has become synonymous with American dictionaries. Graduated from Yale in 1778, he was admitted to the bar in 1781 and thereafter began to practice law in Harford. Later, when he turned to teaching, he discovered how inadequate the available schoolbooks were for the children of a new and independent nation. In response to the need for truly American textbooks, Webster published A Grammatical Institute of the English Language, a three-volume work that consisted of speller, a grammar, and a reader. The first volume, which was generally known as The American Spelling Book, was so popular that eventually it sold more than 80 million copies and provided him with a considerable income for the rest of life. While teaching, Webster began work on the Compendious Dictionary of the English Language, which was published in 1806. In 1807, Noah Webster began his greatest work, An American Dictionary of the English Language. In preparing the manuscript, he devoted ten years to the study of English and its relationship to other languages, and seven more years to the writing itself. Published in two volumes in 1828, An American Dictionary of the English Language has become the recognized authority for usage in the United States. Webster s purpose in writing it was to demonstrate that the American language was developing distinct meanings, pronounciations, and spellings from those of British English. He is responsible for advancing simplified spelling forms: develop instead of the British form develope; theater and center instead of theatre and centre; color and honor instead of colour and honour. In 1840 Webster brought out a second edition of his dictionary, which included 70.000 entries instead of the original 38.000. This edition has served as the basis for the many revisions that have been produced under the Webster name. Question 18: Which of the following would the best title for the passage? Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct word/phrases or senctence for each of the blanks: (36). There could be several reasons why this is the case, and I believe that governments should promote local film-making by subsidising the industry. (37). Firstly, the established film industries in certain countries have huge budgets for action, special effects and to shoot scenes in spectacular locations. Hollywood blockbusters like Avatar or the James Bond films are examples of such productions, and their global appeal is undeniable. Another reason why these big-budget films are so successful is that they often star the most famous actors and actresses, and they are made by the most accomplished producers and directors. (38). In my view, governments should support local film industries financially. (39). To compete with big-budget productions from overseas, these people need money to pay for film crews, actors and a host of other costs related to producing high-quality films. If governments did help with these costs, they would see an increase in employment in the film industry, income from film sales, and perhaps even a rise in tourist numbers. New Zealand, (40), has seen an increase in tourism related to the 'Lord of the Rings' films, which were partly funded by government subsidies. In conclusion, I believe that increased financial support could help to raise the quality of locally made films and allow them to compete with the foreign productions that currently dominate the market. Question 36: A. It is believed that many Hollywood-made films are well-known all around the world. B. It is true that foreign films are more popular in many countries than domestically produced films. C. There are more and more people who choose to support locally produced films. D. Experts believe that local filmmakers are becoming more and more professional. Question 37: A. There are many steps required along with a huge budget to produce a good foreign movie. B. Local film-making industries should find ways to compete with exotic films. C. There are various reasons why many people find foreign films more enjoyable than the films produced in their own countries. D. Although large, international film industries have many advantages over smaller ones, they suffer from serious drawbacks as well. Question 38: A. The poor quality, low-budget filmmaking in many countries suffers in comparison. B. These are examples how local film-makers can improve their products. C. In many other countries, however, it is hard to find such skilled people. D. Although sometimes they also make mistakes and produce low quality movies, it is undeniable that they are successful in the art of filmmaking.

Question 39: A. This can be done in several ways. B. In every country, there may be talented amateur film-makers who just need to be given the opportunity to prove themselves C. It is essential that they invest in educating and training potential directors and actors. D. Theatres and cinemas should also be improved so that customers would find it more comfortable to visit a local one. Question 40: A. Furthermore B. as a result C. for example D. however Khóa học HSG và khóa Vệ tinh trên Moon.vn: http://www.moon.vn/khoahoc/decuong/1599/650/5
