Progra Note When y dear riend, the abulous lutist Carol Wincenc, traveled to Roania in the early 1970s, she ound an irresistible world o traditional usic that included an enchanting reertoire or the nai, or anies. With roots extending back thousands o years, the nai consists o a graduated series o attached reed or baboo ies that are blown across their tos. Music or the instruent derives ro easant songs and dances (soe o which have the characteristic liing rhyths that arise ro the steady alternation o two ulses, one slightly longer than the other), and ranges ro the hauntingly elancholic to the brilliantly virtuosic. In 1979, in rearation or her Nauburg Award Recital at New York s Lincoln Center, Carol asked e to create a work or her drawn ro this wonderul olk usic. The result was Roania!, a duet suggestive o both the nai and the cibalo (a kind o haered dulcier oular in Eastern Euroean olk and other usic). The New York Ties noted that the reiere, at which Carol was joined by harsichordist Kenneth Cooer, raised the audience to heaven, a resonse which has been relicated any ties at her subsequent erorances o the work. Daniel Paget, Cooser O all the usical gits I could receive, nothing is as secial as an original work written exressly or e! Maestro Paget's Roania!, a brilliant "ti-o-the-hat" to y Austro- Hungarian heritage, showcases y deeest inner tzigane-style teeraent.
