Of the evil-spirited Asamañja was a son known by the name Aṃśumat. He was honoured by all people as the grandson of Sagara.

Thereafter, after much time, when the great king Sagara thought, Now I should sacrifice with aśvamedha, then having gone to the place being found in the middle of Himavat and the Vindhya mountain along with Aṃśumat and a host of preceptors, began to sacrifice with aśvamedha.

Aṃśumat, devoted to his grandfather Sagara, did the caring of the horse of this sacrifice. Thereafter the lord of the gods Vāsava, having assumed the body of a demon, stole the sacrificial horse.

Having just seen this, all the preceptors told Sagara: This sacrificial horse was stolen by a demon. Having killed the thief bring back the horse. This gap in the sacrifice would be inauspicious for us all. Thus is to be done by his honour as the gap would cease without delay.

As long as you do not see the horse, so long dig the earth. When you are seeking the horse and horse-thief I will stay here along with the preceptors of Aṃśumat.

Having heard his speech all the sons of the king wandered everywhere in search of the horse and thief by the command of their own father. Having broken the surface of the earth with stakes and ploughs by the strength of their hands, they entered it.

When they born of the king s self broke the earth then she sounded the frightening noise of various beings being killed. By this method they all digging the the Jambūdvīpa, having walked around, in the end came to Rasātala.
