Vladimir Nabokov: A Descriptive Bibliography, Revised Edition Summary Подвигъ Glory Подвиг A13 As Nabokov notes in his foreword, he began composing Подвиг [Podvig] in Berlin in May 1930 and finished it by the end of the year. One day in early summer Ilya Fondaminski, chief editor of the Sovremennye Zapiski, arrived there from Paris to buy the book na kornyu, in the rooted state (said of grain fields before they are harvested) [V]ividly do I remember the splendid zest with which he slapped his knees before rising from our grim green divan after the deal had been clinched! The book s certainly very attractive working title (later discarded in favor of the pithier Podvig, gallant feat, high deed ) was Romanticheskiy vet, romantic times. Excerpts appeared eight times in émigré newspapers: chapters 1 3 in Последние новости [Poslednie novosti / The latest news] on 14-Jan-1931; an excerpt in Россия и Славянство [Rossiia i Slavianstvo / Russia and Slavdom] on 17-Jan-1931; an excerpt in Сегодня [Segodnia / Today] on 5- Feb-1931; an excerpt in Poslednie novosti on 12-Apr-1931; an excerpt in Rossiia i Slavianstvo on 25-Apr-1931; chapters 28 29 in Poslednie novosti on 6-Sep-1931; an excerpt in Rossiia i Slavianstvo on 3-Oct-1931; chapters 37 39 in Poslednie novosti on 7-Jan-1932. The entire novel was serialized in Современные записки [Sovremennye zapiski / Contemporary annals], Feb Dec 1931 (issues 45 48). Podvig was the last of the nine Russian novels that Nabokov translated into English, usually in collaboration with his son or someone else. For the English title Nabokov chose the evocative Glory. Nabokov claimed that the translation was meticulously true to the text. An excerpt appeared in The Times (London) on 11-Mar-1972.
