relude and Celebration Jonathan Dagenais relude and Celebration as commissioned by the a band rom Gatineau Quebec Canada to commemorate the 15th anniversary o the band (an elementary school ith th 5th and 6th grade students) An interesting element o the ork is that the to main themes ere originally comosed by the young students on recorders ive themes ere comosed and sent to the comoser To o the themes ere selected and the iece as built around those themes The irst A theme (in G minor) is used is in the relude section (irst ound in the clarinets b 3-11) It's a slo simle scale-tye melody ith a nice dorian mode touch This theme ill be used also in the climatic section o the the Celebration section (b 65) The second theme B theme (in B lat maor) is the main musical element o the Celebration section (irst ound in the lutes and oboe b 9-55) Contrasting ith the A theme this one is more oyul and rhythmic On the last section o the Celebration all the layers oin together to sing a C edal tone as a arm accomaniment or the three soloists It is a ay to sho that e need unity suort and un in a band to achieve successul erormances Balance and tone quality are the main musical goals to achieve in relude and Celebration Alays try to aim or a good ensemble tone clarity and transarency The relude section (b 1-26) should be layed in an insisting sostenuto and cantabile style avoiding any breathing gas This is a good section to teach the students about breathing eiciency (ater a long note and/or in the middle o a hrase) hrasing and tone quality The transition section (b 27-8) should aim or a great harmonic clarity Ater the diminuendo (b 29-30) o the high oodinds section and ercussion the layers should really take care o keeing a clear suortive m (no cresc) to let the brass and saxohone chords ring It is very imortant to take care o the "harmonic balance" beteen all the brass and saxohone arts to achieve clear ull balanced tone chords Their our interventions alays lead to a ne chords on an accented and tenuto quarter note (b 33 37 1 and 5 on a hole note) It is imortant to really sustain ull value those notes to hear the resolutions (and some harmonic dissonances ith the oodinds/ercussion ostinato) The main challenge o the Celebration section (b 9 - to the end) is the overall balance All the main musical elements (melody and countermelody) are obvious and should be clearly balanced Also in that section it is really imortant to ork on articulation clarity and unity in all sections Alays aim or a light staccato and avoid laying the accents aggressively (more air less tongue) At the singing section (b 75) the sung note (concert C) is notated in the itch o the various transosing instruments That ay anyone can lay the sustained itch or they can use their instrument to ind the itch they have to sing I you ish you can also assign one or to layers (maximum) to lay the note instead o singing it to "secure" everybody else It is very imortant that everyone sings either the middle C or the uer octave (or girls) Avoid the lo bass cle C at all costs or the boys Everyone should aim to sing a clear note ith a quite "angelic" tone The singing note is given by the glockensiel in b 73-7 Be sure that the glockensiel and ind chimes art is covered in that section to achieve the right musical atmoshere onathandagenaisnet ISBN: 9781771572392 CATALOG NMBER: CB15288 COST: $5500 DRATION: 3:5 DIICLTY RATING:GRADE 15 Concert Band enmusiccom
