ANCIENT SECRETS OF THE CHINESE LANGUAGE In a crowded train station in Beijing, China, two teenagers try talking to one another, but they do not seem to understand. First, they speak, then gesture, and eventually give up in frustration. Obviously, they are both Chinese, but why can t they communicate? And if they cannot understand one another, how could an English speaker ever hope to understand them? DIALECT OR LANGUAGE They are speaking different dialects of Chinese, and this is why they cannot understand each other. Usually, a dialect describes a different style of the same language. A 13-year-old boy in Atlanta, Georgia, doesn t speak the same style English as a 13-year-old boy in Chicago, Illinois, but even though they do not sound the same, they can understand one another. In Chinese, though, the seven dialects (Mandarin, Wu, Yue, Min, Xiang, Hakka, and Gan) are more like seven separate languages. Someone who speaks Mandarin, the official Chinese dialect, does not understand someone who speaks Gan, either. Though these are all styles of Chinese, these dialects are mutually unintelligible, speakers of each dialect cannot understand one another. NOT SO SECRET It might come as a surprise, then, that the Chinese have a secret that can help people understand each other, and that secret is more than 7,000 years old. This secret is in the Chinese writing system. In English, we use letters to represent the sound combinations that make certain words. C-A-T represents the three sounds that make up the word cat. Chinese is different. The words they write do not represent sounds, but represent the items themselves. To put it simply, Chinese written words are based on pictures or ideas. Now, when two Chinese people who speak different dialects try to communicate, the sounds representing their thoughts do not match. Their writing, however, isn t based on those sounds, so the writing makes sense no matter what dialect the person speaks. Rather than saying the words aloud, a Mandarin speaker will write the words he or she wants to share with a Gan speaker. That way, they can better communicate. If they try and speak, it would only lead to confusion and frustration. LEARNING TO READ 2. READING COMPREHENSION When a child learns to read English, he or she generally learns the letters of the alphabet and the sounds that represent them. When children learn to read Chinese, however, they must memorise the pictures that represent each word. A person has to know between 3,000 and 4,000 characters to read a newspaper in Chinese or to be considered literate. Frustration is not the end of the conversation for these Chinese teenagers waiting for their train. One reaches into her backpack and pulls out a small pad of paper and a pen. She writes her message on the page. Are you going to Beijing? I am starting school there tomorrow. The other teen scans the page and smiles. THE WORLD NEEDS MORE LOVE LETTERS I m a little pencil in the hands of God who is scripting his love letter to the world. ~ Mother Theresa 1. In the fall of 2010, in the midst of her own depression and loneliness, Hannah Brencher was inspired to become this magical force. Not inspired by something wonderful that suddenly took away her loneliness; but inspired by feeling the loneliness and suffering of others deep in her own heart. 2. During one morning commute, Hannah noticed a middle-aged woman sitting opposite her, staring down at the floor and her unlaced construction boots. No life stories needed to be exchanged for Hannah to feel a connection with this woman. They were connected through an unspoken sense of uncertainty, fear, and sadness. 3. Glancing down at the open notebook in her own lap, Hannah found herself writing the woman in construction boots a letter. Ten minutes had passed before she looked up to see that the woman had disappeared. But something beautiful had occurred 4. For ten whole minutes, Hannah forgot about her own sadness. And before she knew it, over the next few weeks and months, beautifully written love letters were left for strangers to discover in places as random as the United Nations headquarter bathrooms and in between the pages of Barnes and Noble books. But these weren't sad letters about how she was feeling. They were happy letters, all about the other person, not her. She would write messages for people to have a "bright day" and tell strangers how brilliant they were, even if they thought no one else had noticed. 5. Through her blog, Hannah promised her virtual community a love letter to anyone who requested one. Expecting about 20 email requests, she was definitely surprised to read over 100 requests the next morning! I wanted to do an act of love so that they will have no idea how to repay me. It wasn t about the love letters, but what they symbolized. Love letters symbolize presence and intention and, above all, connection. 6. Over the next year, Hannah wrote 400 letters to strangers. At letter number 397 a reporter from the Wall Street Journal approached her about writing a story on the use of social media to drive the hand written practice. 7. At first she was nervous about the new letter requests. But then an interesting thought crossed Hannah s mind. What if social media could be used to empower others to make an impact? Anyone could come to the website and request love letters for someone they care about and anyone could join the online community as a volunteer letter writer. And all of it would be free of charge. I wanted people to feel like even if they don t have money to donate to a cause, they can still join a very awesome cause, and their work can have impact in the world. It s not about you anymore it s about what you can do to give someone else a better day. 8. Hannah receives emails almost every day from people that have been impacted by these letters. A solder in Afghanistan who is suffering from PTSD wrote to Hannah recently. He 8
described that he was sitting on the floor and crying while reading these letters, which had been requested on Hannah s website by his sister. The letters re-instilled his faith in humanity and goodness. Now there are more than 10,000 people who join in all over the world.
