In Paradisum: Lux aeterna 61 Foreword The writg of a Requiem is a secial challenge for any comoser. The great Requiems of the ast by comosers such as Mozart, Verdi and Berlioz terret the sacred Requiem text literally, offerg rayers of salvation for the dearted, whose souls are assumed to be urgatory facg a terrible judgement. Eternal Light: A Requiem is, by contrast, tended to rovide solace to the grievg, reflectg on the words of the Lat Mass by juxtaosg them with oems English. For me, a modern Requiem is one that acknowledges the unbearable loss and emtess that accomanies the death of loved ones, a loss that is not easily ameliorated with latitudes about the joy awaitg us the afterlife. This, like Brahms, is a Requiem for the livg, addressg their sufferg and endurance, a Requiem focussg on the consequences of terruted lives. Howard Goodall, June 2008 Eternal Light: A Requiem was commissioned by London Musici (Artistic Director: Mark Stehenson) to celebrate its 20th anniversary. It was commissioned as both a choralorchestraldance iece for London Musici, The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and Rambert Dance Comany (Artistic Director: Mark Baldw) and as a choralorchestral work. London remiere of Eternal Light: A Requiem: 11 November 2008, Sadler s Wells with Rambert Dance Comany, London Musici, The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, Fchley Children s Music Grou & soloists, conducted by Paul Hosks.
