WORLD LIT FEATURING ROMAIN PUÉRTOLAS Co-presented with Singapore Writers Festival 4 Mar 2015 7.30pm Living Room Free with registration at wl-romainpuertolas.eventbrite.sg Meet Romain Puértolas, author of The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir Who Got Trapped in an Ikea Wardrobe, a farce about a fakir who conned his local community in India into funding his trip to Paris, in search of a new bed of nails. Released in France in 2013, the book has since been translated into 35 languages. It won the Great Jules Verne Prize 2014 and audiobook of the year. Find out how Puértolas, a former French border guard whose job was to detect fraudulent passports, completed his first published novel in just one month, how he s keeping busy with the movie adaptation and what else is in store for him since the release of his second novel, The Little Girl Who Swallowed A Cloud As Big As The Eiffel Tower. This edition of World Lit is moderated by Kenneth Quek, Deputy Director of the National Book Development Council of Singapore and made possible by Institut Français de Singapour, as part of the month of Francophonie in Singapore.

Cambodian poet Kosal Khiev will lead participants through writing exercises in this workshop, evoking memories and feelings about home, work and social surroundings. Come prepared to dig back into the past, pull from the present and reimagine a new future! About Kosal Khiev Born in a Thai refugee camp after his parents fled the Khmer Rouge regime, Kosal Khiev grew up in the United States. During his imprisonment in the US, he found hope and life in poetry, and is today a world-class poet in Cambodia. He lives in Phnom Penh as an exiled American, where he continues to share his story and art. The documentary Cambodian Son, which follows his journey from prison to poet, won Best Documentary at the 2014 CAAMFest in San Francisco.

WORLD LIT FEATURING DANA THOMAS Co-presented with Singapore Writers Festival Galliano and McQueen forever renowned couture names, thanks to two working class British boys who shook fashion to its core. In her new book Gods and Kings, fashion and culture journalist Dana Thomas tells the story of John Galliano and Alexander McQueen, 20 Mar 2015 7.30pm Living Room Free with registration at wl-danathomas.eventbrite.sg who with their daring and deeply seductive designs, moved from the raucous art and club scene of London to the old-school heart of French couture. Thomas, who witnessed their arrival in Paris and interviewed more than 100 people close to both designers, presents their lives in rich detail. Highlighting the similarities and differences in their temperament, charisma and style, she explores both their individual talent and the changing nature of fashion over the 80s, 90s and noughties. WORLD STORYTELLING DAY 2015 SHAKTI: WOMEN BEHAVING BADLY FROM INDIAN FOLKLORE 20 Mar 2015 8pm Play Den $18 Suitable for adults 16 and above Storyteller Kamini Ramachandran explores how the bad girls in traditional Indian folk tales dealt with fear, sexuality, relationships and aspirations in a time long ago. The tales are unadulterated in their rustic bawdiness and celebrate the inner strength of the female characters. This edition of World Storytelling Day is organised by MoonShadow stories, who has celebrated the event in Singapore since 2005.
