Preferred Citation Note [Identification of item], Series number, Box and Folder number, Collection of International Society for the Study of Time Records, MS109, Department of Archives and Special Collections, William H. Hannon Library, Loyola Marymount University. Acquisition Information Gift of Jane Fraser, 2013. Accession Number: 2012.40. Collection Description The collection consists of records of the International Society for the Study of Time (ISST) that J. T. Fraser collected; Fraser founded the society in 1966. The collection also contains personal materials of Mr. Fraser, often interspersed with materials relating to the work of the International Society for the Study. For example, Box 1, Folder 4, contains correspondence between George Ford and Fraser concerning the ISST but also personal cards. Other personal materials of Fraser include an award-winning paper that he wrote as an undergraduate (Box 3, Folder 1) and his patents (Box 2, Folder 6). Important International Society for the Study of Time records include drafts of the constitution (Box 1, Folder 7) and records of its reorganization in Box 3, Folder 1. There are also some group photographs of ISST meetings (eg, Box 2, Folder 1). Materials include incoming and outgoing correspondence (both copies and originals), hard copies of e-mails, photographs, ISST newsletters and minutes, journals, and biograpies of J. T. Fraser. The dates of the materials span the years from 1958 though 2009. The materials were pulled from the original folders in which Fraser housed them; most of these folders had titles assigned by Fraser. In the collection guide the titles are recorded at the beginning of an entry in the description field and are followed by a colon. J. T. Fraser Biography J. T. (Julius Thomas) Fraser (1923-2010), a social scientist, was born in Budapest, Hungary, and lived there until immigrating to the United States after World War II. He attended Cooper Union in New York City and worked as a research scientist at General Precision Laboratory in Pleasantville, New York. Fraser received his Ph.D. from the University of Hannover in 1969; his disseration built upon his previous work on concepts and hierarchies of time. These themes, interest, and research had already led him to found in 1966 the International Society for the Study of Time, whose mission is "to foster the interdisciplinary study of time." Over the next four decades, Fraser authored numberous works, including Of time. Passion, and Knowledge (1975; second edition 1990), and The Genesis and Evolution of Time: a Critique of Interpretations in Physics (1982). These works reflected his belief that the "study" of time should be interdisciplinary. His journal Kronoscope, a Brill publication and a child of the International Society for the Study of Time, also evidenced this interdisciplinary approach, for the journal "invites critical contributions from all disciplines." MS109 2

J. T. Fraser died in 2010, acknowledged as a giant in the field that he pioneered, the study of time. Arrangement This small collection has no series, and its original order was not clear on receipt of the materials. It is arranged in three archival document boxes; each folder in the boxes contains the material originally housed in a folder by J. T. Fraser. His folder titles (when applicable) begin each entry in the contents field and are followed by a colon.
