FYI Slate Hill Student Newspaper Wasting Water By: Hannah Houghtaling Water is a very important factor in life and we need a lot of water. A LOT. But unfortunately water is wasted by the world. Every day nearly 8 gallons of water is wasted and every year 3,000 gallons are wasted. That s a lot of water. Think about it. Every year we waste 3,000 gallons of water and as years progress the numbers are only going to get bigger. If you want to see how water could be wasted with more than just numbers, try this. All you need is a bathtub and yourself. This is very simple. All you do is, the next time you take a shower, pop in a shower plug. You might think this will waste the water and I m defeating the purpose of writing this article but it doesn t waste water, but merely collects your typical usage of it. When you turn on the water make note of how fast the tub fills up. Take your shower as usual. When you re done you will see that the tub is probably very much full. Hopefully this will show you how much water is used and that this happens every day, every year, all the time. Also, unless your parents are okay with an overflowing bathtub I do not recommend doing this if you have a knack for taking very long showers.
JIJI and Jumps...WHY CAN'T HE DO IT!? Does he have arthritis?? By: Hannah Houghtaling and Jo Majors Me and Jo have looked into the very serious matter of ST math. I bet a lot of you students have gotten infuriated at the fact that JIJI can t even get over the little pixel that stands in his way! We interviewed some kids about their opinions on why they think JIJI can't jump. Presley Pingue: He probably can jump, but he s afraid of the block that s probably smarter than him. He also has fat feet and no legs. Jo Majors: I think he has a kidney problem. Hannah Cole: He won t do it because he has fat feet and no legs. Hannah Houghtaling: I think he has arthritis. Now that we have some opinions, what do you think? (Note/Reminder from Ms. Kochensparger: Even though it s funny to think of an animated penguin having arthritis, sometimes teens or kids can get arthritis too, and it s not funny to make fun of people that have that illness.)

Presley: I was the Mayor. Me: What did you do as a mayor? Presley: I made a speech and got everybody's Tax Loans. Me: Out of 1-10 stars how would you rate BizTown? Presley: 10 Ms. Hazlett: 10+ Mr. Grizzell: 10 Twins or Not? By: Abby C. Do you know the two teachers that are called Ms. Head and Mrs. Rhodes? Did you know they might be actually twins?? I didn t either until one day they wore the same outfits! Then they knew they were twins. Mrs. Rhodes told me the whole story What Mrs. Rhodes told me was that when they were born, their parents divorced and the father took Mrs. Rhodes and the mother took Ms. Head. As they grew up they still had the sister-sense and both became teachers. And like I said, they wore the same outfits! Here is the picture of them! What is your opinion? Is this a true story about them being real twins or not? Discuss this topic with your teachers. Check what you think: Yes No

Inventions That Were Made By Kids By Jayden White Here are 3 inventions that were made by kids. There was a girl Abbey Fleck she was eight at the time. She invented the Makin Bacon. Why did she decide to make this? She had an idea: Why not hang the bacon up while it cooks? Also, she realized that the paper towels made the bacon less healthy, by not soaking up the fat. Eventually they had a distribution deal with Walmart. In 2002, the site Entrepreneur.com reported that the new company was earning more than $1 million in royalties annually, and Makin Bacon dishes are still sold at Walmart, as well as Kmart and Target. It was 1905, on a winters night, in San Francisco when Frank Epperson (11 years old) accidentally left a concoction outside. It was a mixture of soda water powder and water in a glass with a stirring stick in the mixture. After being outside for some time the mixture froze solid. You might be thinking that someone accidentally made a treat? Well yes, that s how the popsicle was made. A young six-year-old Kelly Reinhart was stuck inside on a rainy day. Kelly s parents challenged their daughter and her siblings to draw a picture of an invention. The reward for coming up with the best idea was going to get a prototype made. Kelly thought up the T-Pak. The T-Pak is a little pack that would allow kids to hold their video games in the pack. They started selling the packs at flea markets and trade shows, everyone wanted one, so they set up a distribution deal with several companies including Walmart and Target. I think it is wonderful that kids our age can be inventors. Do you have something that could be the next best invention? Source: businessschools.org
Art by Amari Hood Ads By: Jayden White Do you like ads? Because I don t. Most people don t like ads because they are either watching a show, or movie, or playing a video game, but a lot of people love ads too. Did you know that PewDiePie likes ads? The reason people like ads is because they want to know what is new. That doesn t mean that if they were in a middle of a level to finish the game they wouldn t care, they just won t think about it. Also, one time I was playing a game and an ad popped up. The ad lasted 5 minutes and wouldn t let me skip the ad. Last, reasons I also don t like ads is how long the ad is. Ads that last 10-30 seconds are okay with me, but 40 seconds and higher I absolutely hate. If the ad for a huge update for a huge game or a new app or video game that is recommended for me, then I will accept that too. Question of the week: Do you like ads?
