PREFACE We were delighted when rscm fered us opportunity create a furr collection carols supplement those in The Carol Book. Our primary concern was remain faithful rationale The Carol Book which has proved so successful since it was published in 2005. Choirs, choir direcrs accoanists have been grateful for straightforward accessible arrangements fered re, we wanted build on a tried tested formula. Even so re was danger assembling a carol collection which lacked any coherent purpose. We needed a me which would link new material ger. We believe we have found it in fering sixteen carols based on traditional British European melodies. These are English, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, French, Dutch, Flemish, German, Austrian, Swedish, Polish, Bohemian Catalan origin. Some will be familiar, ors less so, but we hope that all will find favour. Knowing how much three-part arrangements in The Carol Book have been appreciated, we have provided not just traditional four-part (SATB) arrangements, but also harmonically coatible three-part versions such that every carol here can be sung by a three-part choir. The coatibility enables accoanists enrich three-part choral harmonies by playing four-part version if y so desire. Several carols can also be sung by unison or two part choirs. Indeed all m can be so performed if an accoanist plays choral parts. In some cases we have used original English texts, but most carols needed at very least be translated in English; in several cases we ok view that an entirely new English text would be preferable a paraphrase original. In this respect we are most grateful Julian Bell, Martin Leckebusch, David Mowbray Paul Wigmore for writing distinguished texts which bring new life carol melodies hir rarely sung in English-speaking world. By ir very nature, traditional carol melodies have survived passage time, it is our hope that se arrangements will prove lasting value bring lasting pleasure choirs congregations alike as y share in joy celebrating Christ s birth. We fer, as an appendix, People look east with a new text by Martin Leckebusch. This circumvents copyright problems experienced by those who bought The Carol Book when it first appeared.
