Favorite Things Nouns and Adjectives 9:30-9:40 Ice Breaker What is your favorite movie or play? What is your favorite song? The Sound of Music is a favorite family musical play and movie based on the true story of the von Trapp family singers and their escape from the Nazis at the end of WW2. One of the songs from this musical, Favorite Things, has become a favorite secular Christmas song, especially among Jewish people who do not celebrate Christ s birth (play YouTube clip): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fh2fon1v5g 9:40-9:50 Vocabulary Conversation Favorite: Play: Movie: Song: Musical: looked upon with special favor as better, having more good a performance of a story on stage a motion picture that tells a story a poem, verse, story, ballad set to music. a special kind of play or movie that uses songs to tell a story Conversation: The song Favorite Things tells about a time when the von Trapp children were frightened by a thunderstorm. Their mother told them to think about a favorite thing instead of the loud noise of the thunder and flashes of lightning. This distracted them from feeling afraid. (the story from The Sound of Music) Is this good advice? Here is a dialog between a parent and a child who is sad to be moving away from a beloved grandparent. 1

Practice this conversation at least twice. The second time, take a different role. I am excited about moving to a new city. But I am sad that I won t see Grandma every day any more. Mom: That makes me feel sad too. I like spending time after school with Grandma. But I won t be able to do that in the new city. Mom: What are some of your favorite things to do with Grandma? Well, sometimes she takes me to the park and pushes me on the swings. Mom: Going to the park with Grandma is lots of fun for you, isn t it? Mom: Yes. She helps me have fun, and keeps me safe. Maybe after we move, we can remember the fun times you had with Grandma at the park. It won t be the same as being with her, but remembering happy times can help us not be so sad. Yes, I think you re right. Maybe I can start making a list of my favorite things that I do with Grandma to help me remember the good times after we move. Mom: That s a great idea. 9:50-10:20 Discussion Let s practice talking about our favorite things. 1. What is your favorite color of the rainbow? (red, green, blue, yellow, purple, orange, other unusual colors like bronze, cream) 2. What is your favorite fruit? (apples, pears, bananas, oranges, other indigenous fruits like kiwi, starfruit) 3. 5. What is your favorite flower? (rose, lilacs, iris, tulips, orchid, other flowers unique to your country) 6. What is your favorite season? (fall, winter, spring, summer) 10:20-10:40 Grammar: Nouns and Adjectives Nouns can be used as the subject in a sentence. Example: Basketball is my favorite sport. Nouns can be used as the object of the verb in a sentence. Example: I like to play basketball. Nouns can be used as the object of a preposition in a sentence. Example: I pumped air in the basketball. In is a preposition. Some other common prepositions are about, across, at, between, by, for, from, in, of, on, to, with. Adjectives describe, or modify, nouns. This means that adjectives change the meaning of the noun, usually just a little bit. Examples: Basketball is my favorite sport. I like to play full-court basketball. I pumped air in the deflated (low air, flat, soft) basketball. An adjective can also come after the to be verb. Example: The basketball is inflated (full of air). In the following sentences, identify whether the noun is being used as a subject, object of a verb, or object of a preposition.) 1. I grow flowers in my garden. 2. Dogs are good pets. 3. I like to eat bananas. 3

4. He was riding on a horse. 5. Jesus helps us when we have trouble. 6. I walked to the park with Grandma. Add adjectives to the following sentences to make them more descriptive of the noun. 1. Those flowers are beautiful. 2. The game of soccer is. 3. This has been a summer. 4. The skin of peaches is. 5. The Bears played a game of football today. 6. The baby played with the puppy. 10:40-11:00 Bible Discussion Lost Sheep - Luke 15:1-7 1 Dishonest tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus sermons; 2 but this caused complaints from the Jewish religious leaders and the experts on Jewish law because he was associating with such despicable people even eating with them! 3-4 So Jesus used this illustration: If you had a hundred sheep and one of them strayed away and was lost in the wilderness, wouldn t you leave the ninety-nine others to go and search for the lost one until you found it? 5 And then you would joyfully carry it home on your shoulders. 6 When you arrived you would call together your friends and neighbors to rejoice with you because your lost sheep was found. 7 Well, in the same way heaven will be happier over one lost sinner who returns to God than over ninety-nine others who haven t strayed away! Words You May Not Know: Dishonest = not honest; Tax collector = a Jew who collects taxes for the Roman government, hated by the people because they were greedy; notorious = known for something bad; Sinner = a person who did wrong actions and had 4

Perhaps it is physical, emotional or spiritual. How did you deal with it or overcome it? Do you think Jesus can help you? 5. If Christ invited you to eat a dinner with Him at your local restaurant, do you think he would judge you or care you? What would Jesus say to you? 5
