Functional Piano MUSI 1181 FALL 2014 Name: Carolyn Savko Office Number: Music 367F Office Telephone Number: 817-272-1387 Email Address: Savko@uta.edu Office Hours: See Instructor for appointment Course Number, Section Number, and Course Title: MUSI 1181.001, Functional Piano Time of Class Meetings: MW 9 am Course Description: The prerequisite is 1180 or permission from the instructor after playing and sight-reading for the instructor. Concentrated work on scales, hands together and hands alone. Expanded chord vocabulary, modes related to major, other scales structures. Continued work on sight-reading, literature and improvising. Supplementary solo repertoire. Students will be graded on preparation and playing of pieces in class each week. Grading: TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR AN A - COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS AND NO MORE THAN THREE ABSENCES. (Absences for any reason band trips, tours, count in the total) TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A B - COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS AND NO MORE THAN FOUR ABSENCES (see above statement) TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A C - COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS AND NO MORE THAN FIVE ABSENCES. STUDENTS WILL BE GRADED ON PREPARATION AND PLAYING OF PIECES IN CLASS EACH WEEK. THERE ARE 3 PROFICIENCY PERIODS WHICH WILL BE GRADED. Student Learning Outcomes: Knowledge of major scales and chords Ability to read and play advancing level literature Coordination of hands together Connection of brain to hands Requirements: Music 1180 Student must supply earphone and adaptor Required Text: Alfred s Group Piano Book I Descriptions of major assignments and examinations: Weekly assignments of scales, literature, exercises, chords, will be heard individually. Grading Policy: Student is graded on how well prepared they are and how well they play the assignment. Must have steady beat, rhythms correct, and accurate notes. Must attend class for an A. More than 3 absences B. More than 4 absences C. Attendance Policy: Attendance is not mandatory. However, if you skip classes, your grade will reflect that. Final Review Week: A period of five class days prior to the first day of final examinations in the long sessions shall be designated as Final Review Week. The purpose of this week is to allow students sufficient time to prepare for final examinations. During this week, there shall be no scheduled activities such as required field trips or performances; and no instructor shall assign any themes, research problems or exercises of similar scope that have a completion date during or following this week unless specified in the class syllabi. During Final Review Week, an instructor shall not give any examinations constituting 10% or more of the final grade, except makeup tests and laboratory examinations. In addition, no instructor shall give any portion of the final examination during Final Review Week. Classes are held as scheduled during this week and lectures and presentations may be given.
